Middlesex celebrates handover of new Ritterman Building

Innovative teaching and learning facility will open to students from the start of the new academic year

Ritterman BuildingBrand new campus facility the Ritterman Building was officially handed over to Middlesex University yesterday from construction consultants Interserve.

The new building, which began construction in March 2015, will provide five storeys of innovative teaching space for the Schools of Science and Technology, Art & Design and Media & Performing Arts.

The University marked the exchange with a presentation event attended by Chief Commercial Officer Katie Bell, Director of Estates and Facilities Andrew Dickie, Managing Director at Paragon (a division of Interserve) Matt Bray, and Amy Butt, Associate Director at BPR Architects.

Environmental sustainability is at the heart of the Ritterman building with its design incorporating a number of environmentally friendly features, including a living wall. The 110 square metre structure is Barnet’s largest living green wall that, with the help of 3,500 plants, will aim to save, store and recycle rain water.

Other environmental features of the Ritterman Building, which has been named in honour of the University’s Chancellor, Dame Janet Ritterman, include photovoltaic panels to generate electricity and energy efficient lighting controls.

Commenting on the new facility, Katie Bell said: “The Ritterman Building demonstrates Middlesex University’s commitment in putting students first. I would like to thank all those involved for their hard work in creating a modern and inspiring new teaching space, ensuring Middlesex is one of London’s biggest and best campuses.”

The building is still being furnished inside but will open to staff and students at the end August ready for the start of the new academic year.
