More and more people are being diagnosed with mental health conditions, and the demand for skilled mental health workers is reflected in NHS London’s workforce projections – they will need to train 25% more mental health nurses each year until 2015.
“What appeals to me about mental health nursing is how interactions can make a huge positive difference on someone’s life,” says Justin McDermott (left), a Middlesex graduate who worked in Psychiatric Intensive Care and is now teaching physical care skills at Middlesex.

Mental health in the ageing society
The incidence of dementia is increasing as people live longer, and Middlesex researchers are developing new tools to support care and quality of life – such as a “mockumentary” DVD about the Queen visiting a dementia day centre (left).
Lecturer Trish Hafford-Letchfield came up with the idea as a way of involving dementia patients in nurse and social worker education - “It helps give voice to patients’ own feelings and shows that carers and people with dementia can have fun together –laughing at themselves and each other.”

Middlesex graduate Lorraine Kelly (left), Director of Nursing at Kings Oak and Cavell Hospitals, shows that nursing has many career possibilities. Lorraine has worked in a number of NHS and private healthcare settings in London, including as a lead nursing specialist in breast care and junior matron. Lorraine ensures a high standard of nursing care and that nurses are able to develop skills through appropriate training.
