The Institute for Work Based Learning (IWBL) is internationally recognised for innovation and expertise in professional and work-based learning. The Institute offers organisations and individuals the opportunity to gain formal recognition and academic credit for learning that occurs in the workplace. 

The IWBL creates higher education programmes where participants focus their learning on their workplace activities, enhancing the skills and abilities of individuals and providing return on investment for employers in the UK and around the world. The Research Centre is at the heart of the Institute, investigating the development and application of professional work-based learning .

The IWBL supports a broad range of innovative professional practice programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level. For more senior practitioners, the Institute offers a Professional Doctorate and Professional Doctorate by Public Works. The Institute works with a range of partners to create workforce development programmes. Led by the Institute, Middlesex University has developed innovative University Higher Apprenticeships in a number of sectors.
