Global Work and Employment Project (GWEp)
Work and employment can no longer be defined and understood within the confines and parameters of the single nation state. Since the 1970s a new internationalised division of labour has emerged, which has been driven by market regulation and economic liberalisation. Work has been reorganised on a global scale and at the level of the enterprise the employment relationship has been reshaped. The liberalisation of international financial markets has encouraged the flow of capital across borders, expanding the world total of foreign direct investment in its wake. In consequence the number of manufacturing workers in the South is now more numerous than in the North. Economic liberalisation has also been the spur for migration of workers and burgeoning informal labour markets. As a result concerns have arisen of a ‘race to the bottom’ and its effects on the well-being of workers. Debates on international labour standards and decent work have come to the fore.
The purpose of this project is to address the problems and questions arising from these developments. In particular the Project aims to:
- describe and understand the new forces shaping the world of work and employment
- prepare research reports and papers, and to convene seminars and workshops which address policy concerns arising from such developments
- disseminate research findings to the wider academic and practitioner community
GWEp is based at Middlesex University Business School (MUBS) in London, UK and convened by Professor Martin Upchurch.
The Project is intended to draw together academics within the school and beyond who wish to disseminate their ideas by engaging with policy practitioners in the world of work. The website portal is designed with this objective in mind, and is open to contributions from all academic disciplines. The linked sections provide immediate links to research reports, academic papers and other relevant material as well as information on seminars, workshops, round tables and conferences.
