Crime and Conflict Research Centre

The Crime and Conflict Research Centre (CCRC) includes sociologists and criminologists. It continues the research tradition established by the previous Centre for Criminology founded in 1986, which focused on interdisciplinary research into crime and the criminal justice system. The Centre is involved in developing innovative and pioneering work not only in the areas of crime, policing, community safety, justice and victimisation, but also in the broader field of conflict: social movements, international conflicts, political violence and terrorism. It is also engaged in understanding how these conflicts, at the local, national and international level, trigger institutional responses and forms of state control. For more information please see our research staff profiles.

The Crime and Conflict Research Centre is a member of the GERN (Groupe Européen de Recherches sur les Normativités).

Several of the members of the new centre have extensive international research links and, in addition, have extensive experience of developing and running three Masters programmes in the following fields: youth justice; criminology; criminology and forensic psychology; crime, conflict and control.

Members of the centre have supervised many students to successful completion of PhDs and we welcome applications for PhD supervision within staff fields of interest.

The Centre's aims  are to:

Lead innovative and theoretically informed research into crime, conflict and institutional control within sociology and criminology;
Carry out joint research with other research centres, both internally and externally;
Secure high quality research funding from a range of sources, including research councils, charities, government departments, the European Community, and other international agencies;
Contribute to public debate on research and policy through the dissemination of research findings by a variety of methods, including publications, seminars and conferences; and
Increase the number of research students.
