Enterprise and Economic Development

Research in this area is largely focused in the Centre for Enterprise and Economic Development Research (CEEDR), an internationally recognised centre combining research and research-based consultancy on small and medium size enterprises and on regional/local economic development.  The main research themes, projects and academic outputs are summarised below.

Regional/local governance

Changing city/regional governance and its relationship to local/regional economic development. This includes a particular focus on deprived localities.

Enterprise and disadvantaged groups and neighbourhoods

The links between enterprise and social inclusion or poverty alleviation; issues of trust between enterprises; cooperation within community groups or social enterprises; the role of enterprise in deprived areas; social enterprises, minority ethnic businesses and access to finance; refugees; social enterprise; business support; the role of informal economic activity; attitudes to debt.

Enterprise behaviour in diverse social-regulatory contexts

Including: cultural influences on health and safety attitudes and behaviour in small businesses; regulation and enterprise compliance behaviour; behaviour of organisations (including private and social enterprises) offering public services in 'quasi markets' of education and health services in the UK.

SMEs and local/regional development

Innovation, technology and manufacturing best practice; SME policy and the regional dimension of innovation; enterprise in English rural areas.
