Design for all
Mission statement
The Design for All Research Group shall utilise current and new high quality research theories and methodologies to enable all people, including older people and people with disabilities to be e-included and to participate in the electronic knowledge revolution.
The Design for All practice responds to the requirements of older people and people with disabilities to be included in the design of technologies and environment.
The aim of the group is to:
- carry out research that utilises, combines and verifies relevant theory from across a range of disciplines
- influence policy makers and further the field of design for all research by the establishment and promotion of the Design for All Curriculum for all ICT professionals across Europe.
European partnership: EDeAN
Design for All Research Group is the UK national contact centre for EDeAN, which is a European-funded network on e-accessibility representing 100 organisations from Europe.
Future activities
Members of the Group from across the University are working together to enable ground breaking Design for All work by application of innovative theory or by applying relevant theory in a new area including:
- Applying for grants for research funding from SRCs
- Developing European consortia to support application under EU FP7:
- Understanding the Challenge: Socio-technological research on the role technology can play in addressing individuals/ communities' needs
- Ensuring equal access and participation: Removal and prevention of technological barriers through the application of DfA methods/ tools and (new) Assistive Technologies
- Promoting and developing Design for All Curricula through workshops and seminars
- The support and development of postgraduate and doctorial students
