History of Art and Design
The History of Art, Architecture and Design research group at Middlesex represents a distinctive combination of interests and undertakes interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary research of a kind that redefines the meaning of the histories of art and design and their many modes of articulation.
The group makes an original contribution to the future of research in Visual Culture through a variety of research practices that enable us to develop methods of cross-referencing diverse approaches to modernity from a number of disciplinary positions (architecture, film, sound, urban studies,) and theoretical and political perspectives (gender, ethno-difference, social history) through a variety of forms of communication including major editorial projects, curating and conference organising. This is developed pedagogically via practices of teaching directly from research and the shaping of questioning intellectual environments through which research may be effectively pursued.
The work of staff and research students group promotes the overlapping and interweaving of the following research modes and themes:
- curating,
- design and fashion cultures,
- urban and cinema studies,
- critical art history and art criticism,
- aural cultures,
- art writing,
- cultural theory.
We support a post-graduate culture of work at a mixed-mode, theory/practice interface and especially welcome prospective doctoral research proposals in this vein.
The History of Art, Architecture and Design research group is part of the Art and Design research institute (ADRI), for more information please take at a look at the website.
