Music of Language, Language of Music

Development, Meaning and Literacy

Language and music share many features: both are composed of sequences of sub-units; both require these units to be organised according to conventional structural rules; they vary pitch, temporal and rhythmic features to convey meaning; they utilize specific writing systems; and both organise coordinated or joint social actions.

The Language and Communication Research Group held its first seminar at Middlesex University (London) on 20 July 2010, focusing on the development and evolution of language and music. The second seminar was held at the University of Cambridge, Centre for Music and Science, on 13 to 14 December 2010 and discussed the themes of Meaning and Entrainment. This meeting has resulted into the publication of a special issue of Empirical Musicology Review (forthcoming), edited by Fabia Franco and Ian Cross. The 3rd and final seminar took place at Middlesex University (London) on 5 to 6 September 2011, and focused on two themes: Communicative Interaction and Literacy and Expertise.
