Centre for Psychoanalysis

Middlesex University was one of the first universities in the United Kingdom to have enabled and fostered the teaching of psychoanalysis at graduate level, offering a taught MA degree and the opportunity to register for a research degrees (MPhil and PhD) since 1990.  The Centre for Psychoanalysis facilitates individual and collaborative research into psychoanalysis.

The Centre:

  • provides a focus for the scholarly activity of its members
  • hosts international conferences, seminars and workshops at Middlesex University
  • provides a productive work environment for many visiting scholars in the field
  • develops research projects with colleagues from the European Union, the Middle East, Russia and Latin America

Opportunities for study and research:

We welcome applications for taught or research degrees.

Our MA in Psychoanalysis constitutes an in-depth introduction to the field.

Research Degrees may be undertaken full or part time at three different levels: BPhil, MPhil and PhD, which in principle correspond to one, two, and three years of fulltime research respectively. Fulltime PhD students usually register for an MPhil and transfer to a PhD after one or two years subject to satisfactory progress.

Students who are able to spend only a limited amount of time in the UK can undertake an International MPhil/PhD by distance learning. This can be undertaken by full-time or part-time mode.

An alternative qualification of an MProf/DProf (Professional Masters or Doctorates) in Psychoanalysis, taught in collaboration with the School of Work Based Learning, is also available to applicants.
