Work Based Learning Research Centre

Welcome to the Work Based Learning Research Centre (WBLRC) where you can find more information about our research activities, publications research events and our staff. Our research focus is on:

  •  learning that takes place at, through and for work  
  •  how this learning is being conceptualised within higher education frameworks
  •  new approaches to knowledge.

Our research activities are centred on personal development and organisational/community or professional change through the use of work-based learning processes and teaching technologies. 

Range of research

Members of our centre engage in a wide range of research activities within the context of organisational and individual learning and change in higher education, for example:

  • developing Work Based Learning as a field of study
  • intellectual capital
  • accreditation
  • assessment
  • innovations in partnering with organisations
  • virtual leaning environments that support effective WBL.

Our expertise contributes to Work Based Learning modules and programmes and doctoral-level research degrees. Our centre has contributed to the excellent reputation of Work Based Learning at Middlesex for building and sustaining productive partnerships with a range of public, private, voluntary and community sector organisations, both nationally and internationally. We are now at the forefront of pedagogic research and scholarly enquiry being carried out as part of the five-year development programme of the Centre for Excellence in Work Based Learning.

About our candidates

Our research candidates undertake a Professional Practice masters/doctorate programme. Candidates come from a wide variety of professional backgrounds, are usually in their mid- to late careers and wish to develop themselves and their organisations, communities or professional areas.
