Andrea is an experienced microbiologist with skills and interests in molecular biology, food safety, applied microbiology, disinfection/sterilisation, food chemistry and engineering, bio-active polymers and photonics.
Andrea’s research has focussed on different aspects of the applied microbiology. Research carried out included: the use of new photosensitization technologies to inactivate microbes in wash-water from fresh produce and the quantitative correlation between oxidative stress biomarkers and survived bacteria; the use of rechargeable antimicrobial films for surface disinfection and destruction of bacterial biofilms; the rapid detection of low numbers of pathogens in food matrices with conventional PCR and RTi-qPCR without enrichment by removal of PCR inhibitors using bentonite coated charcoal and soluble starch; the encapsulation of novel controlled-release emulsions in buccal films against fungal oral infections.
