Andy Gossett MA FRSA MISTD Senior Lecturer in typography and graphic design.
Created "sonicFonts" (sound reactive typography) using the visual programming language Quartz Composer for his MA in Design for Interactive Media. He has recently completed the Creative Programming for Digital Media & Mobile Apps course (using the open source code enviroment Processing). He is currently researching into code based generative graphic design; the tactile nature of reading; Quantum Literature on mobile devices and is developing a code based series of digital prints for the Al-Mutanabbi Street Coalition these will be donated to the Iraq National Library in Baghdad. Two copies will join exhibits in the U.S. One copy will go to the UK (and be used as part of exhibits there and Europe, the Middle East and North Africa). One copy (in 2016) will join work from the project at the Herron ArtLibrary (Indiana - Purdue University) and be digitized by them, becoming part of their permanent collection of work from this project.
Andy is fascinated by all forms of typography from molten lead to digital ink. He founded the Astonish Me Press, is a D&AD Award winning letterpress artist/printer. He co-founded the design practice studioGossett which specialises in the design and production of art books and exhibition catalogues and before that he was a partner in Omnific Studios with Derek Birdsall RDI and Alan Kitching RDI.
He has designed and produced books for artists and galleries around the world including Anna Maria Pacheko at the National Gallery, London, Anthony Caro at the Serpentine Gallery and the Kunstmuseum Dusseldorf, Futurism and Photography at the Estorick, London, most recently working on a number of books with Lund Humphries the latest being the monograph for Colin Reid: "Colin Reid Glass Sculpture" which explores the work of internationally renowned contemporary glass artist Colin Reid.
He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and Juror for the International Society of Typographic Designers.
Andy gained his MA in Design for Interactive Media at the Lansdown Centre for Electronic Arts, which sparked a new passion in interactive and code based design. He created sonicFonts, sound reactive typography. This interest has led to the successful completion of the Creative Programming for Digital Media & Mobile Apps course run by Goldsmiths Computing Science department. He has just initiated a new workshop: "Design by Numbers" introducing the principles and ideas of code based interactive design to the undergraduate graphic design students.
He has been programme leader for the MA in Graphic Design and has developed the lateral and conceptual ideas from this into another new workshop for undergraduate students called "Thinking Design". These are a series of self contained activities that cover a wide range of ideas aimed at developing the designers approach to design. Projects involve answering the question What colour is Loud, creating a new form of Graphic Notation and then writing and performing a new piece of music. Another workshop gets the students to create forensic self portraits using objects placed in Police Evidence bags and Another sequence of Portraits using found images on badges. The students are also asked to explain to an Alien how to put on a hoody.
Andy has been a council member of the International Society of Typographic Designers (ISTD) and runs their international award project each year at Middlesex. Successful students have had work showcased at the Design Museum and have been presented awards by Partners at Pentagram Design Studios.
Andy runs the type design project and a leading alumni and graduate of these workshops is Phil Garnham, Creative Type Director at FontSmith (responsible for the design of the type identity at Channel Four). Andy has received certificates from the ISTD and the D&AD for his involvement and teaching in their Awards and competitions.
Andy is developing his interactive code project sonicFonts and is investigating how to make this project available on mobile devices.
His work in this area will form the method for his code based series of digital prints for the Al-Mutanabbi Street Coalition, an ongoing project of work by international artists.
He is also investigating the tactile nature of reading and the ways electronic literature is altering modes of reading.
