Dr David Keane is Associate Professor in International Human Rights Law at Middlesex University, and currently Programme Leader of the LLB. He holds a BCL (Law and French) from University College Cork, Ireland (1996-2000), and an LLM (2000-2001) and PhD from the Irish Centre for Human Rights, National University of Ireland, Galway, where he was awarded a Government of Ireland scholarship for his doctoral studies (2002-2005). Dr Keane's research is in international human rights law, with a particular focus on the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD). Overall he has published four books and over thirty journal articles and book chapters on human rights, ICERD, minority rights, freedom of expression and related areas (for full list see Research Output and Interests tab). His book 'Caste-based Discrimination in International Human Rights Law' (Ashgate/Routledge, 2007) won the Hart Book Prize for Early Career Academics in 2008 and has been widely cited, including by the UK Supreme Court. His most recent book (with A. Waughray), '50 Years of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination: A Living Instrument' (Manchester University Press, 2017), represents the very first edited collection on ICERD. Dr Keane teaches Child and Family Law (LLB), International Human Rights Law (LLB and LLM), and Minority Rights and Indigenous Peoples in International Law (LLM), as well as supervising PhD candidates. He also acts as a Visiting Professor at the University of Bordeaux, France, on the Law and Languages programme. Dr Keane's current teaching is in International Human Rights Law (LLB, BA Law and LLM); Child and Family Law (LLB and BA Law); and Minority Rights and Indigenous Peoples in International Law (LLM). He also teaches Tort Law as a visiting professor at the University of Bordeaux, France (Licence de droit et langues).
