Dr. Glenford Mapp received his BSc (First Class Honours) from the University of the West Indies in 1982, an MEng (Distinction in Thesis) from Carleton University in Ottawa in 1985 and a Ph.D. from the Computer Laboratory, University of Cambridge in 1992. He then worked for AT&T Cambridge Laboratories for ten years before joining Middlesex University as a Principal Lecturer.
Glenford is currently an Associate Professor. His primary expertise is in the development of new technologies for mobile, distributed, and vehicular systems. Glenford did research on Y-Comm, an architecture for future mobile communications systems. He now leads research into Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and has been involved in the design and deployment of VANET (G5) Testbeds. See: www.vanet.mdx.ac.uk.
In February 2018, Glenford was chosen by Amity University in Noida, India to receive the Amity University Distinguished Researcher Award in the field of Networking for his significant contributions to heterogeneous networking. The award was presented at the IEEE Sponsored 9th International Conference on Cloud Computing, Data Science & Engineering; Confluence-2019 on January 10th-11th 2019 at Amity University Campus, Sector 125, Noida, India.
In July 2020, Dr. Mapp was invited to join the International Advisory Board of Amity University.
In April 2021, Glenford was invited to join the College of Expert Reviewers of the European Science Foundation (ESF).
Present Projects
The Building of a TCS-MDX Testbed
The project is a collaboration between Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and the Middlesex University (MDX) VANET Research Group to build a heterogenous vehicular network at the TCS Aura Building in Leamington Spa. The 200K testbed will support both IEEE 802.11p and 5G base stations and will be used to model heterogeneous environments and to build new applications and services for the automotive industry.
The testing of SLTP
SLTP stands for the Simple Lightweight Transport Protocol. It was developed to provide low latency and high bandwidth for vehicular networks. We have now begun to formally test SLTP for wide-scale deployment. See: RC_ITCVT2018_05.pdf (mdx.ac.uk)
Past Projects
The Building of the York C-ITS Testbed: 2018-2019
This project developed a C-ITS Testbed in the city of York along the A59. See: Eboracum Project Final Report (york.gov.uk)
Central London Testbed Project (CLTP): 2017-2018
This project looked at developing a Connected Vehicle (CV) Testbed at the Kings College Building along the Strand in Central London. See: Connected vehicle testbed: development & deployment of C-ITS in the UK
The Middlesex University Extended Connected Vehicle Testbed: 2013-2017
This project designed and implemented a CV Testbed on the Hendon Campus of Middlesex University and along the A41 which runs behind the Hendon Campus. See: Building an Intelligent Transport Information Platform for Smart Cities
The Y-Comm Project: 2006-2015
The Y-Comm project was about designing a framework for future mobile communications systems. This project was a collaboration between several universities including Middlesex University, the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil. Y-Comm has made several novel contributions in the area of future mobile communications. See: Y-Comm global research group | Middlesex University London (mdx.ac.uk)
The Network Memory Project 2003-2010
This project was about using fast networks to provide blocks of network storage to applications. A prototype system was built and analysed. See: Thakker, Dhawal (2009) Prefetching and clustering techniques for network based storage.
