Dr Starr joined Middlesex University in 1999 on a half time post. At this time she also worked as a senior clinical psychologist in Hammersmith & Fulham NHS Trust. Prior to this she practised as a clinical psychologist in Camden & Islington NHS Trust and within Simmons House Adolescent Unit. Middlesex University was her first academic post. Dr Starr completed a two year family therapy training at the Tavistock clinic. She now works half time with young people, children and families in clinical practice and half time at Middlesex University. She is integrative in her clinical approach and draws on evidence-based CBT, systemic and psychodynamic approaches to psychological distress.
Dr Starr teaches on all aspects of psychology and mental health in the department of psychology.
She is a member of the MU psychology ethics committee and University wide Step Changecommittee on mentally healthy universities.
She has been a visiting lecturer to University of East London, Active Birth Centre, Chase Farm Hospital and the Manor House Counselling and Psychotherapy Training course.
Fiona conducts research on clinical outcomes and practitioner experiences of therapy and supervision. She is also interested in clinical research with children and adolescence and ideas of reflexivity in therapy, teaching and learning.

Fiona consults to the media, magazines and the mainstream press e.g. The Guardian,The The Telegraph, Times Educational Supplement, The BBC and The Daily Mail on issues of child and adolescent psychology. She has also written a range of popular articles for parenting magazines. Fiona is often invited to conduct expert witness work and she carries out regular medico-legal work, particularly in matters of child protection. When she is not at Middlesex she runs two busy psychology clinics, one in Muswell Hill, North London and one in Harley Street.
