Professor Upton leads the School of Media and Performing Arts at Middlesex. She joined the University in 2012 as Dean and Professor of Theatre. Prior to joining the University she held the Chair in Drama at the University of Ulster and was previously a lecturer in Drama and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Hull.

She has published in the areas of translation for performance, directing, documentary and verbatim theatre and contemporary theatre practice. She is particularly interested in theatre in Ireland and Northern Ireland and theatre and social justice as well as European avant-garde performance practices. She is founding editor of Performing Ethos: An international journal of ethics in theatre and performance, and maintains an active profile as a director and translator.

Professor Upton has sat on a variety of panels with the AHRC including the Commissioning Panel for Beyond Text and the Postgraduate Review Group, and has reviewed for both the IRCHSS and the Higher Education Academy. She was formerly Senior Academic Advisor for Drama to PALATINE and remains an academic associate of the HEA and a member of the national advisory group for Drama, Dance and Music. She has worked with the QAA at various times and is a former Chair of SCUDD, the subject association for Drama in higher education. She advised the CEA on the development of a new Performing Arts A Level in Northern Ireland and is currently part of the A Level Review Advisory Group for Drama for Pearson Edexcel. She was previously a member of the Board of Directors of Hull Truck Theatre.
