Tim is a social scientist with over 25 years' experience of health services research in a range of settings. Before joining Middlesex University in April 2015 Tim worked at the Imperial College Faculty of Medicine. He has extensive experience in the preparation of successful programme and project research grant proposals, multi-site project management and supervision of research teams. He currently collaborates on projects with partners at Imperial College, Kings College London, UCL and Nottingham University. Tim has been an investigator on funded projects with a total value of over £12m.
Tim's research has focused on the community management of severe mental illness, personality disorder, substance misuse and populations where mental illness and substance misuse co-occur. Other key research themes are service user involvement, child and adolescent psychiatry and the management of forensic mental health services. He has developed particular expertise in evaluative research that combines qualitative and quantitative methods to investigate the process and outcome of complex health interventions.
Tim joined Middlesex University with the aim of developing new programmes of research into the delivery of community mental health and substance misuse services. He is actively developing collaborative links with local and national service providers – both within the NHS and the independent sector.
Qualifications:
1982 | BA Degree (Hons) Social Sciences: 2:1 | The Hatfield Polytechnic |
1990 | MSc Advanced Educational and Social Research Methods. | The Open University |
2004 | PhD, Public Health Medicine | Imperial College, London |
English (Mother tongue)
Tim's teaching experience has mostly been allied to his research activity, with a strong focus on the teaching of research methods (at undergraduate and postgraduate levels) and supervision (at post-graduate and doctoral levels).
Tim currently co-supervises 4 PhD students and has supervised two PhD students to successful completion.
He has been an external examiner at Kings College London and University College London and was a post-graduate tutor at Imperial College.

RESEARCH MANAGEMENT | |||||||||||||||
I have had extensive involvement in the preparation of successful programme and project research grant proposals, multi-site project management and supervision of research teams. My research has focused on the community management of severe mental illness, personality disorder, substance misuse and populations where mental illness and substance misuse co-occur. Other key research themes are service user involvement, child and adolescent psychiatry and the management of forensic mental health services. I have developed particular expertise in evaluative research that combines qualitative and quantitative methods to investigate the process and outcome of complex interventions. I have been an investigator on successful programme and project grants with a total value of £18,828,094 (£1,099,317 as Principal Investigator) | |||||||||||||||

Tim's research focuses upon the delivery of mental health and substance misuse interventions in real world clinical settings. Tim has been associated with a number of studies that have had tangible impact on policy and practice, or the potential to do so. Examples include the development of a focus on the management of co-morbid substance misuse (dual diagnosis) within mental health services subsequent to epidemiological work which Tim led describing its prevalence in treatment populations. Current trials of the use of contingency management in drug treatment indicate that the approach has great potential. Tim is working with NHS trusts and non-statutory providers to support implementation of the approach in routine practice.
