Tong started her career as a Structural Engineer in Tianjin Architecture Design Institute in China after graduating from Tianjin University. Then she pursued further career development by studying MSc in Renewable Energy and Architecture at the University of Nottingham, followed by PhD research in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and field testing on natural ventilation in buildings.
Tong contributed to various research projects funded by Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) with UK and European academics and industry collaborators, e.g. (1) predicting human-environment thermal interaction in naturally ventilation buildings; (2) applying additive manufacturing technologies from building design to fullscale building components fabrication in freeform construction; (3) rapid prototyping for advance modelling of building ventilation. She also won High Performance Computing (2010) award and ANSYS Wall Planner Competition (2007).
As a Chartered Engineer and Committee member for the Intelligent Buildings Group in the Chartered Institution for Building Services Engineers (CIBSE), Tong is engaged in effective communication between academics and practical professionals, and promoting state-of-art building science and technology through international collaboration, also disseminated in the contribution to Encyclopedia of Sustainable Science and Technology by Springer and Elsevier. She is the Co-coordinator of the International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction (CIB) Commission W098 Intelligent and Responsive Buildings.
Through research-led teaching at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China, she engaged multi-disciplinary students in Design-for-Real project (2014-16) to improve the quality of rural education, attracted national and international industry partners to steer the sustainable development of local communities in the north-east of China. Tong is continuing to work on R&D projects to address barriers and provide policy recommendations for developing green intelligent buildings and cities for local governments.
Tong initiated and contributed as the Engineering Lead in MDX Living Pavilion project that being recognized as the runner-up for Teaching Excellence at Guardian University Awards 2020. Being a Chartered Engineer, Tong bridges the gaps between technical rigour and creative exploration, research and real world applications - enabling transdisciplinary collaboration, cultural and community connections for sustainable transformation of natural and built environment.
