Critical Care Nursing: Core Concepts and Interventions

Overview

This module is aimed at developing nurses with prior experience and competence in the care and management of critically ill patients within an intensive care environment. The module will build upon this prior knowledge and practical experience through a broad range of teaching methods and self-directed learning.

Specific patient care will be explored in relation to current literature and you will be expected to analyse the validity of contrasting evidence-based practice in the management and care delivery of critically ill patients.

Why study the Critical Care Nursing: Core Concepts and Interventions at Middlesex University?

Taught by experienced practitioners, the module will focus on common conditions experienced by critically ill patients exploring the pathophysiology, disease process and management strategies.

This module will be delivered online through  a series of lectures, discussions, group work, and self-directed learning key areas related to critical care nursing will be explored. As part of this learning process you will critically analyse, appraise and reflect on critical care concepts, including current evidence surrounding common nursing and medical interventions.

Delivery through weekly study days will enable you to maintain employment whilst advancing your learning. This course will provide both clinical and professional progression and equip you for a range of roles and clinical responsibilities. The 30 credits gained at either level 6 or 7 could also be put towards a BSc degree or MSc Nursing Studies.

Course content

This short course is structured to enable you to maintain your professional employment while advancing your learning through weekly study days. The module takes a system based approach focusing on the common conditions experienced by critically ill patients whilst incorporating Step 3 of the National Competency Framework for Adult Critical Care Nurses.

Assessment

Assessment includes an essay and Step 3 of the National Competency Framework for Adult Critical Care Nurses.

How to apply

To be eligible for the course you need:

1. to have been working as a registered nurse within an adult intensive care unit for at least 6 months
2. to have successfully completed an introduction to ICU course and equivalent competencies as per Step 1 of the National Competency Framework for Adult Critical Care Nurses
3. to have previously successfully studied at level 6
4. the full and written support of your manager (reference band 7 or above)
5. written confirmation from your reference of a mentor to support you within practice for the duration of the course

The fees* below refer to the 2022/23 academic year unless otherwise stated.

Per credit: £63
30 credits: £1,890

There are several funding options available:

• receiving course fees via CPPD contracts between NHS trusts and Middlesex University
• paying your own fees
• sponsorship by your employer (but not under a CPPD contract).
