Delivering Evidence Based Dementia Care

Overview

Enhance your knowledge and ability to assess and manage individuals with dementia through this short module course taken at either level 6 (undergraduate level) or level 7 (postgraduate level).

The course is designed for a wide range of practitioners including social workers, occupational therapists, psychologists, registered nurses, and allied healthcare professionals. We understand the needs and challenges for mental health practitioners working with clients in a wide range of settings. That is why we have developed this course to be beneficial for professionals from multiple backgrounds including nursing, counselling, volunteering, and the independent sector.

The course is designed to enable you to maintain your employment while studying. The module is delivered through a series of lectures and workshops and the main aim is to equip you with the knowledge and skills to be able to identify, assess and manage individuals with memory/cognitive problems, dementia including referral pathways. It is expected that by the end of this course you will be able to assess the needs of a patient, including planning, implementing, and evaluating the care they receive.

It is extremely important for those working within the field of dementia care to be enabled to study at the academic level of Module MHR 3632/MHR 4632, so that the work undertaken with clients, carers and families is recognised not only for its therapeutic value but also for its academic merit.

Course content

The aim of this module is to develop the student’s mastery of evidence base interventions in relation to meeting the needs of people with dementia and their family caregivers from diagnosis to end of life. It also aims to facilitate high level understanding of the complexity of needs experienced by people with dementia, in a socio-cultural context and with particular reference to the specific needs of minority groups which may include ethnic communities, younger people, and those with learning disabilities

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this module, you will be able to:

1. Discriminate multidisciplinary perspectives about dementia and critically evaluate therapeutic approaches to person-centred dementia care from diagnosis to end of life and demonstrate critical knowledge of assessment and diagnosis of dementia
2. Appraise the central role of communication in interpreting an individual’s needs particularly in relation to actively develop, implement and defend strategies in responding effectively to the needs of people whose behaviour is challenging
3. Critically appraise a range of ethical and legal issues impacting on people with dementia and their families, and summarise up to date knowledge of relevant legal frameworks and be able to advocate for referral to an appropriate agency/professional as necessary
4. Critically analyse the specific diversity issues affecting minority groups affected by dementia
5. Evaluate the individual palliative care needs of people with late stage dementia and their family /caregivers with reference to the importance of working in partnership

Learning and teaching

The current COVID-19 situation and ongoing uncertainty and challenges surrounding social distancing rules has impacted on how we deliver learning and teaching. To this end, all our short courses, modules and programmes will be delivered this autumn onwards through a mix of online/virtual and face to face modes where possible.

Teaching methods on this course include PowerPoint presentations, seminar groups, student lead presentations, group work, use of digital technologies including videos, pre and post session work activities, blended activity.

Assessment

MHR 3632 (Delivering Evidence Base Dementia Care)

You will be required to submit a 3000-word critical appraisal of a therapeutic intervention relevant to the care of a person with dementia. This should demonstrate critical analysis of the evidence-base of the chosen intervention and application to practice.

Assessment Weighting: 100%

MHR 4632 (Delivering Evidence Base Dementia Care)

You will be required to submit a 3000-word critical appraisal of a therapeutic intervention(s) relevant to the care of a person with dementia, demonstrating analysis and synthesis of the evidence-base and critical reflection on practice and personal development

Assessment Weighting: 100%
