Enhance your leadership and management skills with opportunities to apply strategies to an improvement project in this practice-based course designed for a wide range of professionals including teachers, team leaders, project leaders, middle managers and other informal or formal leaders.

Why study the Developing Effective Leadership and Management Module at Middlesex University?

Available through online distance learning or at our state-of-the-art London campus, this course will equip you with the skills and support to develop effective leadership and management approaches to your practice. Guided by experienced practitioners, you will begin by exploring a series of tools for practical leadership before developing a leadership and change project to improve education within the context of your practice.

Through a series of workshops and practice-based activities you will then collect data and analyse the tools you used to carry out the project, evaluating the effectiveness of your approaches and reflecting on your abilities as a manager or leader. As part of this learning process you will explore a wide range of key topics that will enhance your knowledge, skills and project effectiveness, including leadership styles, organisational cultures, staff development, teamwork, and management research.

Armed with these advanced skills and practical insights you will not only enhance your practice and career prospects for the future but obtain valuable research that will be of benefit to your organisation.

What will you study on COURSE?

This short course is structured to enable you to maintain your professional employment while advancing your learning through part-time study sessions at our London campus or online distance learning resources and tools.

This is a practice-based programme comprising of three components:

  1. Workshops sessions to develop a series of tools for practical leadership.
  2. Development of a leadership and change project to improve education within your context.
  3. Collection of data to be analysed alongside the tools you chose to use during the change project.

As part of this learning process, you will explore a range of topics to enhance your project and skills as a leader, including:

  • Need for leadership change and improvement
  • Defining leadership and management
  • Leadership styles
  • Organisational cultures
  • Management of change
  • Planning
  • Staff development and coaching
  • Teamwork
  • The change/improvement project
  • Leadership and management research

Assessment

You will be assessed through a portfolio of assignments constructed throughout the year under the module leader's supervision. The portfolio may contain:

  • Needs analysis
  • Planning of the project and research
  • Evidence of implementation
  • An analysis of the impact of the project
  • An analysis of leadership and management

This module is suitable for teachers and those working in educational organisations that have a formal or informal leadership role. You may be team leaders, project leaders, ASTs, middle managers or other leaders of adults.
