Level Level 7
Fees £440.00
Start dateNovember 2023
March 2024
Module leaderDr Brooke Townsley

This short course prepares you to take the Unit 2: Semi-Specialised Translation paper of the CIoL Diploma in Translation (DipTrans) exam. The course is designed for experienced translators who wish to take the full DipTrans or to resit this individual unit. (If you are new to translation as a professional activity, you are recommended to consider the Introduction to Translation course and the CIoL Certificate in Translation).

During your course, you will consider and practice semi-specialised translation tasks from the domains of Technology, Business or Literature, in order to identify your preferred choice of specialisation for the actual DipTrans examination.

Overview

The CIOL Qualifications Level 7 Diploma in Translation (DipTrans) is set at Master's level and is the gold standard for freelance translators or in-house translators for companies and organisations worldwide, meeting their need for the highest-level professional translating qualification. After successful completion of all three units of the DipTrans, you can apply for full membership of CIoL and use the designatory letters CIoL DipTrans.

On completion of your Unit 2: Semi-Specialised Translation course, you can progress to the Unit 3: Semi-Specialised Translation (Science, Social Science, Law or Arts and Culture) course to prepare for the final unit of the DipTrans.

Teaching and learning

The course is delivered online, over seven learning weeks.

You will attend a 2-hour live webinar on Mondays between 0930 and 1130. All webinars are recorded and you will be able to access the recordings throughout the duration of your course.

Assessment and Feedback

You will complete three practice translations and submit them for assessment and feedback and receive feedback on each piece of translation from a bilingual reader of your language. You will also have three one-hour one-to-one online tutorials with the bilingual reader of your translations to discuss your questions about their feedback. You can also arrange tutorials with the course leader at any time during your course.

The source texts for all three practice translations are taken from past DipTrans papers and all marking and feedback will use the DipTrans marking criteria. Your third piece of assessment will be undertaken under timed conditions to simulate actual DipTrans exam conditions.
