Overview

The health coaching workshop is underpinned by evidence-based practice in person-centred approaches and will enable you to gain knowledge and confidence in delivering health coaching client centred conversations about behaviour change. This workshop will enable you to gain confidence in utilising evidence-based approaches such as health coaching and motivational interviewing skills as part of your CPD development. The Health Coaching Skills workshop is appropriate for nurses, social workers, social prescribing link workers, care coordinators, people involved in delivering personalised care and support plans, and similar roles.

Course content

This workshop will help you develop your practice by learning the following:

  1. Introduction to health coaching and motivational interviewing and how to utilise these approaches so that you are better equipped to help clients change their health-related knowledge, attitudes, and behaviour.
  2. Be able to conduct an eliciting behaviour change talk/conversation, and learn how to raise your client’s awareness of risky behaviours, how to respectfully challenge their ambivalence and resistance to change their behaviour, and how to enable a skilful dialogue with your client (underpinned by ethical principles of practice, advanced communication skills and collaboration/co-production and partnership working with clients)
  3. Be able to conduct a behaviour change client centred conversation with tutor feedback using Role Play (e.g. Role play a health coaching conversation with a client with diabetes and alcohol misuse with a history of non-adherence to treatment and recommendations).
  4. Become aware of the skills and competencies required in situations where health behaviour change is challenging for clients and review your own learning needs in this area of development.
  5. Learn how to assess service user’s/client’s suitability for health coaching interventions and when and how to signpost clients with comorbidities and complex needs.
