Develop the knowledge and skills to support women, families, midwives and healthcare teams in delivering high quality maternity care in our short course for practicing support workers.

Why study the Maternity Support Workers Module at Middlesex University?

This course is designed to enhance your ability to assist maternity teams in providing safe and holistic care to women and families. Taught by experienced practitioners at our state-of-the-art London campus, you will explore the maternal, fetal and neonatal physiological changes that occur during pregnancy, labour and puerperium, with particular focus on the principles of accountability, including the role boundaries in maternity services.

Delivered through weekly study days to enable you to maintain your employment while advancing your learning, this course will challenge you to develop and apply your knowledge of basic adult and neonatal anatomy and physiology, and to develop care plans under the supervision of a midwife. Throughout the course we will ensure that you do not undertake care that falls within the remit of the midwife and instead focus on developing the key support skills that will enhance your current practice, such as taking blood pressure, pulse, temperature and respiration.

Armed with these enhanced skills you will become more effective in your current practice and obtain an excellent base knowledge for pursuing further academic study in Midwifery if you wish.

We’ll carefully manage any future changes to courses, or the support and other services available to you, if these are necessary because of things like changes to government health and safety advice, or any changes to the law.

Any decisions will be taken in line with both external advice and the University’s Regulations which include information on this.

Our priority will always be to maintain academic standards and quality so that your learning outcomes are not affected by any adjustments that we may have to make.

At all times we’ll aim to keep you well informed of how we may need to respond to changing circumstances, and about support that we’ll provide to you.
