This module facilitates the student to explore, develop and advance their skills and knowledge in perioperative nursing. This will allow the student to establish a professional knowledge base and competence in perioperative nursing.

Why study the Principles of Perioperative Nursing Module?

On completion of the module, you will be able to:

  • Critically appraise the role of the perioperative nurse in the context of current health care practice
  • Analyse and apply evidence based practice to perioperative patient care
  • Analyse and apply ethical and legal principles to perioperative practice
  • Demonstrate competence in managing patients throughout the perioperative period undergoing a range of surgical interventions
  • Critically examine current and future challenges for perioperative service delivery

What will you study on the Principles of Perioperative Nursing Module?

This course will cover the following areas:

  • The role of the Perioperative nurse
    • Current health care context
    • NMC frameworks
    • Specified functions within Perioperative nursing, scrub, circulating, anaesthetic, recovery
    • Learning from service users
  • Evidence based care in Perioperative practice
    • Minimising risk
    • Never events
    • Speciality knowledge
    • Infection control
  • Nursing care of patients undergoing a range of surgical interventions
    • Anaesthetic care
    • Recovery care
    • Emergency care
    • Meeting the needs of patients with complex needs / medical history
  • Current context and future challenges impacting upon perioperative service delivery
  • Ethical and legal issues in Perioperative practice

Learning, teaching and assessment strategy

The module is delivered over six days, and uses a range of adult learning approaches including:

  • Online quizzes
  • Student presentations
  • Discussions and group work
  • Clinical Assessments and production of a poster

To be eligible for this module, you should have six months experience within the perioperative environment and should have previously studied at level 6. You must also be working as a theatre nurse, in order to be able to complete the module assessments.

There are several funding options available:

  • receiving course fees via CPD contracts between NHS trusts and Middlesex University
  • paying your own fees
  • sponsorship by your employer (but not under a CPD contract).
