The Apprenticeship programme is an employment-based route offering you a way to qualify as a teacher (QTS) while based mainly in a school. As an apprentice, you will receive a salary at least at point 1 of the unqualified teachers’ scale.

This programme will give you the opportunity to gain a postgraduate qualification, the PGCert Teaching, which can be used towards a Masters award in the future. This will enable you to develop your skills for teaching and for understanding the interrelationship between learning and teaching, as you develop into a critically reflective practitioner.

As an employment-based route the great majority of your time will be spent in your employing school. Your training programme has fully embedded the Core Content Framework for Initial Teacher Training. You will have the opportunity to gain the knowledge and skills required to fully meet the Teacher Standards by the end of your apprenticeship training. The content and focus of many aspects of the training programme will be targeted to meet your individual needs, by utilising the resources of the school and their alliance partners. In addition, at Middlesex you will also benefit from access to the University's extensive resources, including those provided by the library and student support services.
All apprenticeship programmes have to be at least 12 months and this programme lasts for four terms. Typically, at the end of term three, you will be recommended for QTS and be eligible to move to the Qualified Teachers’ pay scale. During term four, you will be ready for the ‘end-point assessment’ (EPA) which is the final stage of the apprenticeship. Preparation for the EPA will enhance and consolidate your achievements in relation to the Teachers’ Standards and be part of the Early Career Teacher (ECT) induction period.

The Teaching Apprenticeship provides you with off-the job training which fully embeds the Core Content Framework for Initial Teacher Training. The training includes subject enhancement sessions and a programme of professional studies which will include online and campus teaching as well as training within your employing school and alliance. This training will be tailored to an appropriate age range within either the primary or secondary phase (and subject if in the secondary phase). These may include sessions which allow you to visit a variety of partnership schools and non-formal educational sites to enhance learning in specialist areas. You will have opportunities to enhance your knowledge and pedagogy of your phase, subject, or specialist areas of the curriculum, and you will be able to develop your understanding of key contemporary issues within education, such as those around inclusion and diversity and future curriculums.

There are no fees for an apprenticeship training teacher. Postgraduate teacher apprentices working in maintained schools must be paid in accordance with at least point one on the unqualified teachers’ pay scale whilst on the programme. Apprentices should be paid as full-time employees. As salaried employees, they are not eligible for any training bursaries or student maintenance loans.
You can find career progression in both the classroom and within a school's management structure. You might aspire to become the head of a department, age group or curriculum. And through developing your leadership skills and experience, you could progress to a senior management position, such as deputy head or head teacher (earning a salary of between £54,223 and £121,749 as a head teacher in inner London).
