Why study Early Years Initial Teacher Training: Assessment Only Route at Middlesex University?

This Assessment Only (AO) course is a route to Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS) that does not include a period of training. It is suitable for very experienced graduate practitioners from the UK or overseas who have taught in at least two early years settings in the UK but do not have EYTS.

Candidates will need to demonstrate that they are able to meet the Teachers' Standards (Early Years) without further training, and once accepted candidates are expected to qualify in 12 weeks.

What will you study on the Early Years Initial Teacher Training: Assessment Only Route?

This is not a training programme, instead, it is a selection and assessment process.

Following receipt of a complete and suitable application the process is as follows

Stage 1: Selection

Part 1: Confirmation of qualifications, experience and employment status via interview at Middlesex University with an Early Years Teacher Training tutor. Entry requirements will be checked and candidates will be advised about preparing for Part 2 of the selection process. Before progressing to Part 2 candidates must provide proof of successful completion of the Professional skills tests. Candidates who fail the tests on three occasions will not be able to complete Stage 2 and will not be eligible for EYTS assessment.

Part 2: Formative assessment, suitability check and development planning. This is carried out by a University tutor in consultation with a senior member of staff in the early years setting who will confirm your evidence claim, understanding and experience and establish your suitability for this route. It will include observation of your practice and your skills in communicating in Standard English. Where sufficient evidence is identified, the tutor will approve the candidate for assessment and support the candidate in preparing a development plan. This will identify any weaknesses and gaps in evidence and set targets for the candidate, which may include elements of training/professional development and time frame in which to qualify.

Stage 2: Assessment

Part 1: Initial assessment.

This will include a summative interview and observation, carried out by the teacher training tutor, shortly before final assessment and moderation, in order to confirm that targets have been met and the scope of evidence collected is sufficient. The tutor will provide written feedback on performance and make an assessment judgement about EYTS. Initial assessments can be arranged after 6 weeks of the assessed period and before final assessment/moderation in week 12. This allows candidates to present supplementary evidence at the final assessment stage if required.

Part 2: Final assessment/moderation

This will include interviews, observation(s) of practice and scrutiny of the portfolio of evidence. It will be carried out by a different assessor who will seek to confirm and moderate assessment judgments.

How are candidates supported during the process?

Candidates are approved for assessment by an experienced Early Years Initial Teacher Training (EYITT) tutor who aims to ensure that candidates are fully conversant with the Teachers' Standards (Early Years) and requirements for Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS).

The employing early years setting will provide a mentor who is able to undergo EYITT mentor training. The mentor will meet regularly with the candidate, provide guidance and support, and provide feedback which addresses the Teachers' Standards (Early Years).

What happens when the candidate is judged to pass and meet the Teachers' Standards (Early Years)?

We notify the Department for Education (DfE) and EYTS will be awarded. A certificate will be sent to the candidate.

  • A professional portfolio with evidence to demonstrate the Teachers' Standards (Early Years) and assessed teaching practice with babies, toddlers and young children up to the end of the Early Years Foundation Stage

Role of the candidate's early years workplace

It is important that the early years setting, as the candidate's employer, is committed to the candidate undertaking this route and the candidate must seek the permission of the manager/head teacher to support the application.

Having the early years setting's commitment to provide a work-based mentor who is willing to undergo EYITT mentor training will also be a condition of acceptance on to the route. The role of the mentor is to provide a written report based on regular observations of the candidates teaching practice and to meet the candidate regularly to support them in addressing any professional development targets established at the selection stage, including portfolio development.

A mentor or line manager who can verify the candidate’s practice with babies, toddlers and young children will contribute to all stages of the process and be available for feedback and interview when the University EYITT tutor visits.

All early years settings will be asked to sign the partnership agreement, which is drawn from elements of our existing ITT partnership agreements.

How will the Early Years Initial Teacher Training: Assessment Only Route support your career?

Early Years ITT is the only teacher training focused on the birth to five year age range. This makes Early Years Teachers ideally placed to provide high quality education and care for babies and young children in the private, voluntary and independent sectors, free schools, academies and in maintained schools at the discretion of the Head Teacher. The pay and conditions for working in early education and childcare settings outside maintained schools are determined by employers at a local level.

We’ll carefully manage any future changes to courses, or the support and other services available to you, if these are necessary because of things like changes to government health and safety advice, or any changes to the law.

Any decisions will be taken in line with both external advice and the University’s Regulations which include information on this.
