Visiting research students

Students currently registered/enrolled on a PhD programme at other institutions can apply to study at Middlesex University as a visiting research student.

You can apply to visit Middlesex University for between 1 month and 12 months. During this period, you will be undertaking research which is complementary to your own PhD project at your home university.

Visiting students are advised to check that the relevant school/department has academic expertise in the field of your research. Information on individual schools and staff members is available on our website. Visiting Research Students will not receive a certificate and are not entitled for any qualification from Middlesex University.

How to apply

Please download an application form from our online portal. Applicants are recommended to submit the following documents along with their application:

  • Copy of the passport/ EEA National ID card/ Photo Card Driving Licence (UK only)
  • Qualification documents and transcripts
  • CV (if employment section has not been complete in application form)
  • English language qualifications, if applicable (please see our English Language Requirements for more information)
  • Optional portfolio for Art & Design / Media & Performing Arts applications

Further Information

Please note that for the majority of our research disciplines, the University has fixed intake terms (October/January). However for Visiting Scholar applicants, they may start at any time of the year.

We encourage you to submit your application as early as possible so that your proposal can be reviewed in good time. We recommend that you submit your application no later than two months ahead of your intended start date.

From the day you receive your applicant number it can take up to 3 weeks to receive an initial admissions decision. However, during busier periods, this process may take longer. If there is any supporting documents missing or pending, your application will be considered incomplete and this may delay your admissions process. Writing a research proposal

As part of your application, you will need to provide a research proposal. In this, you will identify the area of research that interests you. You will also need to prove that you can develop a way of studying and make an original contribution, bearing in mind that a research degree can take up to seven years to complete. International Students

If you are an overseas student, you may be required to book a credibility interview which will help prepare you for the VISA application process. This would need to happen before we can make you an official offer. Please see our VISA advice page for more information on the Visa Process.

Fees

Visiting period between 1 month and 6 months: £500 fixed fee

Visiting period between 6 months and 12 months: £1000 fixed fee
