Middlesex University's Education Department is offering a programme of training opportunities that respond to the diverse needs of our partnership Primary schools and Early Years settings.

In order to work with you on our priority areas of the Primary and Early Years curriculum, session leaders use a combination of

  • robust academic research in learning theory
  • understanding of innovative practice
  • knowledge of latest government directive.

Facilitators for the sessions have extensive experience of individual subjects and share a common commitment to creativity, inclusivity and cross-curricularity. These are key features of our work at the University and ones we recognise schools are also keen to develop.

Our expertise is shared through twilight and whole day INSET, through centrally-run courses on our Hendon campus or bespoke courses designed in consultation with the school responding to individual needs.

  • English

    • The power of picture books

      Course Outline:

      Picture books have a powerful role to play in reading, developing visual literacy, drama and in work across the curriculum from Nursery to Year 6. Contemporary children's picture books are often at the forefront of experimental work in narrative.

      By using a range of picture books we will demonstrate their power – planning creatively around a picture book, linking to visual, performative arts and media. The books enable children to explore complex themes, experience multiple perspectives and enjoy the challenge of the interplay between word and picture. Picture books can inspire and motivate readers and writers of all ages into producing imaginative and exceptional performance.

      About the course leaders:

      Dr. Victoria de Rijke is Associate Professor in English and widely published in the field of children's literature and visual arts education. Lorraine Kessler-Singh is senior lecturer in Primary Education and teaches English. She has completed a master's degree in children's literature. Previously she has worked extensively in primary schools as a literacy consultant and class teacher.

      Through our work at the University in classrooms and research, we have developed insights and strategies using high-quality picture books as powerful resources for creative reading, writing and drama.

    • The power of poetry

      Course Outline:

      Poetry can enhance and develop the literacy skills of teachers and pupils from early phonics to gifted readers and writers.

      This course involves getting to know a range of poetry approaches and ideas to support confident teaching and build upon teachers' knowledge. It includes modelling approaches on appreciating, reading, performing and drafting poetry from whole class to group, paired and individual poems.

      Participants will learn to develop pupils' skills in listening, talking, visualising, reading, writing and performing diverse forms of wordplay.

    • The power of talk

      Course Outline:

      Given its importance in underpinning children's achievement in reading and writing, we aim to recover the place of oracy in the curriculum.

      The course includes practical activities and explicit teaching and learning strategies for speaking and listening, including a range of lively group and drama activities exploring adapting talk for different purposes; talk for writing; book talk; exploratory talk; teacher talk, and a dialogic approach to teaching and learning.

  • Maths

    • Making numbers real

      Course Outline:

      Through the use of hands-on, multi-sensory activities, this session will investigate how to optimise our support of children in their developing number ideas. By responding to questions such as "What is a number?" and "Do we need to be able to count in order to calculate?" course participants will deepen their subject knowledge and leave with ideas that they will be eager to try out in their classrooms.

      The session will be based on evidenced research in the development of children's number sense. The course leader will challenge the reliance on counting to calculate and to investigate number sense through knowledge of place value, estimation, magnitude and the ability to subitise.  Pedagogy will be discussed through the use of tens frames, Numicon, multi-link, Cuisenaire and counters.

    • Multi-sensory approaches to the teaching and learning of mathematics

      Course Outline:

      Through activities using Numicon, this course will highlight the importance of the four representations, action, imagery, talk and structure that serve to deepen children's understanding in mathematics. The course will support teachers in how to plan lessons that incorporate these vital elements in order to achieve a more effective learning experience for children. 

      Outcomes:

      • To understand the rationale for a multi-sensory approach to the learning of mathematics and how it links to the key aims of the National Curriculum for mathematics
      • To leave with ideas for practical activities that deepen conceptual understanding and ensure firm foundations in mathematics
      • To be confident to use a multi-sensory approach to the learning of mathematics that creates an inclusive and challenging classroom for all ages and abilities.

    • Supporting children to reason mathematically

      Course Outline:

      Reasoning is fundamental to knowing and doing mathematics yet often we find it hard to recognise in the classroom. This workshop, through a variety of hands-on problem solving activities will explore vital mathematical habits and how to identify them in children. Effective questioning and carefully selected activities are key strategies for developing mathematical reasoning and participants will enjoy the opportunities this session provides to develop these pedagogical skills.

      Outcomes:

      • To develop understanding of where Mathematical Reasoning fits within the key aims of the Mathematics Programme of Study for KS1 and KS2.
      • To have strategies that optimise the progression of mathematical reasoning skills through the primary year groups
      • To be able to take back ideas that can be used in the classroom tomorrow.

  • IT

    • Using the interactive whiteboard creatively in the History and Geography curriculum

      Course Outline:

      The aim of this course is to apply computing and technology subject knowledge in order to recognise the potential uses of technology across the subjects of the national curriculum in order to develop a creative outlook and an inspirational, enquiring, adaptable approach.

      Whilst it is not statutory at Key Stage 1 to use IT, it is clear that pupils will learn from and enjoy activities which incorporate use of IT. In Key Stage 2 there is a statutory requirement for pupils to use IT "to help in geographical investigations.(DfES Geography Programmes of Study: Purpose of Study)

      We will:

      • Explore software to enhance teaching and learning with particular reference to history and geography
      • Explore a range of interactive whiteboard techniques to support creative teaching and learning across the curriculum.

      A computer suite/ laptop trolley and an interactive whiteboard is a requirement.

I am keen to work with teachers to develop their use of technology within their practice so that it reflects the computer culture in our society today.     • The development of m-learning (mobile learning): using iPads/tablets to support teaching and learning

      Course Outline:

      The whole landscape of computing tools and applications for learning is changing rapidly. Games have emerged as productive and effective learning tools; mobile learning has come of age, and any new developments are expected to run on multiple devices, from desktop PCs to smartphones. Internet connectivity is now taken for granted in the UK.

      We will:

      • Consider developments in mobile technologies and implications for teaching and learning
      • Research and evaluate available resources/applications
      • Consider ways in which tablet devices can be used in teaching and learning across the curriculum.

      Lorraine Kaye is a senior lecturer in Primary Education at Middlesex University. She has completed a master's degree on e-learning and is currently editing a book, Young Children in a Digital Age. "As the subject leader for computing I have maintained and developed my commitment to the use of information and communications technology in education throughout my career, and believe that all children and educators should not only understand the benefits of learning through technology but should also be digitally literate, reflecting the computer culture in our society. I also believe that these skills should not only be taught in isolation, but also integrated throughout the curriculum."

    • Progression of computer programming from Foundation Stage to Key Stage 2: part 1

      Course Outline:

      The core of computing is computer science, in which pupils are taught the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work and how to put this knowledge to use through programming.

      Building on this knowledge and understanding, pupils are equipped to use information technology to create programs, systems and a range of content (DfES Computing Programmes of Study: Purpose of Study).

      The course will:

      • develop knowledge and understanding of the teaching and learning of computer programming
      • explore the progression of computer programming from Foundation Stage to Key Stage 2
      • investigate a range of programming activities in the classroom.

    • Using programming in technology to enhance design and technology projects

      The course will develop the teacher subject knowledge in computing and technology that is required to teach the new aspect of the KS2  Design and Technology Programme of Study (2014); " to apply understanding of computing to program, monitor and control their products"

      We will:

      • Explore hardware and software which can be used to enable children to program, control and monitor their products.
      • Explore a range of lesson ideas, projects and pedagogies to support teaching the Design and Technology curriculum with respect to the use of technology.

  • Science

    • Simple mechanisms at KS2

      Course Outline:

      This course is designed to cover the subject knowledge required to teach the new Simple Mechanisms unit of the upper KS2 Science curriculum (levers, pulleys and gears) in a clear and enjoyable manner.

      Enjoyable, simple, hands-on activities will reinforce subject knowledge acquisition and provide useful lesson ideas for practical Science lessons.

      Ideas for more ambitious practical lessons and links to the Design and Technology curriculum will be discussed. Examples of key scientific ideas and the people behind them will be given in order to inspire and enthuse young scientists.

      Dr Elizabeth Flinn is a lecturer in Primary Science and Design and Technology at Middlesex University. She has over 10 years of experience as a Science specialist and is still an active teacher in KS1 and KS2 classrooms.
