Introduction to conference interpreting

Do you have experience of public service interpreting or translation? Would you like to learn consecutive and simultaneous interpreting skills and practise interpreting in the booth?

The Middlesex University Introduction to Conference Interpreting course is designed for working linguists with interpreting experience in a range of settings, including public service interpreting. The course will introduce you to conference interpreting and provide training in consecutive interpreting with notes and simultaneous interpreting in the booth.

The Introduction to Conference Interpreting is offered in English combined with French, Spanish or Turkish. You will need a near-native command of French, Spanish or Turkish and a native command of English. Acceptance to the course is subject to an interview with the course tutors.

The course consists of eight 2.5-hour sessions taught over eight weeks from October 2015. On successful completion of the course, students receive a certificate of attendance and a final assessment grade.

You will also have access to:

  • fully equipped Brahler simultaneous interpreting booths
  • Mellissi digital language laboratory
  • mock conferences
  • access to authentic speeches from the European Parliament via the SCIC speech repository.

Staff Profiles

Mr Eloy Rodriguez (Spanish/French/English)

Eloy is a practising conference interpreter with extensive experience of conference interpreting in a range of governmental and commercial settings. He holds an MA in Conference Interpreting from the University of La Laguna (Spain) and teaches conference interpreting at the University of Vigo (Spain).

Mr Brooke Townsley (Turkish/English)

Brooke is Senior Lecturer in Interpreting and Translation at Middlesex University and has 19 years experience of public service interpreting. He holds an MA in Turkish from SOAS (London) and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Linguists. Brooke is also the Introduction to Conference Interpreting programme leader.
