This degree weaves academic learning into the economics and business context internationally and includes the option to take a valuable paid placement year where you'll be exposed to applying economics into action. You can choose to do short term internships in choice public, private and voluntary organisations such as government departments, banks, risk and insurance sectors, investment and broking firms, retail and manufacturing firms, start-ups and charities among many others.

This degree will equip you with key skills in economics, including data analysis, group presentation and discussion, writing and report preparation. It's been designed for students who are interested in starting up their own businesses, be involved in running and managing businesses or becoming financial and/or economic analysts. Students gain a working knowledge of both theoretical and empirical methods that can be applied to the industry and world context.

You will learn about the following during your studies:

  • Individual and firm behaviour under uncertainty
  • Price determinism and discrimination

You'll also develop a robust ability to use Excel, Stata and other statistical software, interpret financial data and write business reports.

Our Economics Department has strong expertise in fields of behavioural and experimental economics as well as econometrics. These are all important in helping to apply economics theory and knowledge to business practice. With well-founded links with the financial, governmental and voluntary organisations, you'll be supported on work placements and internships and also overseas study in linked universities.

What will you study on BSc Economics?

Over the duration of this course, you will be introduced to Micro and Macro-economic theories in the first year, followed by advanced training in the second and third years. There will be an emphasis on examining how Micro and Macro-economic theories are being applied in real world situations and you'll explore essential quantitative techniques that underlie Micro- and Macro- Economics. Finally, you'll develop an understanding in the fundamentals underlying statistical analysis of data.

What will you gain?

As well as in-depth understanding of Economics, you will also gain transferable skills such as communication and computational skills.

You'll be able to critically read, write, listen, present and argue economic concepts and their applicability. You'll also be able to design data collection tools as well as analyse and interpret the data with an aim to help improve economic decision-making, including business decisions and operations.

You'll gain an awareness of current economic and financial news happening and their potential impacts on businesses, economic and statistical literacy.

      This module will allow you to examine micro and macro-economic theories in the business environment.

    • Economic Applications (30 credits) - Compulsory

      In this module, you'll apply selected micro and macro-economic theories to the running of business in the real world.

    • Statistics and Interference (30 credits) - Compulsory

      This module will develop your understanding of the fundaments of statistical analysis of data.

    • Quantitative Techniques I (30 credits) - Compulsory

      In this module, you'll explore computational skills to help manage business finance.

  • Year 2

    • Microeconomics (30 credits) - Compulsory

      This module will encourage you to develop a more advanced understanding of microeconomics.

    • Macroeconomics (30 credits) - Compulsory

      In this module, you'll develop an advanced understanding of macroeconomics.

    • Econometrics (30 credits) - Compulsory

      Thi module will enhance your understanding by using econometric methods to analyse economic data.

    • Quantitative Techniques II (30 credits) - Compulsory

      This module will allow you to develop a more advanced understanding of quantitative methods for economics.

  • Year 3

    • Advanced Macroeconomics (30 credits) - Compulsory

      This module will further develop your advanced understanding of macroeconomics.

    • Advanced Econometrics (30 credits) - Compulsory

      In this module, you'll develop an advanced understanding of and ability to use econometrics.

    • Advanced Microeconomics (30 credits) - Optional

      This module will further developing your advanced understanding of microeconomics.

    • Trade and Growth (30 credits) - Optional

      In this module,you'll learn theories relating to international trade and economic growth and how they are being applied in an increasingly interdependent world.

    • Industrial Organisation and Policy (30 credits) - Optional

      Through this module, you'll develop knowledge of firm strategic behaviour in markets such as market concentration, monopoly power, price discrimination and firm strategic interaction in markets.

    • Development and Labour Economics (30 credits) - Optional

      Through this module, you'll develop knowledge in microeconomic theories that can be used to explain and predict problems in economic development faced by developing countries and labour economics.

    • Economics of Entertainment and Sports (30 credits) - Optional

      This module will allow you to smartly apply traditional micro and macro-economic theories to explain modern lucrative business operations in the entertainment and sports industries.

    • Monetary Policy (30 credits) - Optional

      In this module, you'll gain an understanding of how businesses would be affected by government’s changing monetary policies.

    • Work Internship (30 credits) - Optional

      The internship module gives you the opportunity to undertake a period of work experience for a minimum of 30 days. This will facilitate you to gain an insight into the world of work and appropriate conduct at work, and the process of becoming and staying employable through assertiveness, continuing development and reflection on both your development and the link between theory and practice. You will also develop an understanding of the organisation, sector and the environment in which it operates.

Optional modules are usually available at levels 5 and 6, although optional modules are not offered on every course. Where optional modules are available, you will be asked to make your choice during the previous academic year. If we have insufficient numbers of students interested in an optional module, or there are staffing changes which affect the teaching, it may not be offered. If an optional module will not run, we will advise you after the module selection period when numbers are confirmed, or at the earliest time that the programme team make the decision not to run the module, and help you choose an alternative module.

This course will give you the subject knowledge as well as the transferable skills that are highly sought after by employers. Typical job roles available could be Analyst, Director, Manager, Teacher or Administrator in private business or public bodies like the NHS.

Dr Rascon Ramirez is a lecturer and researcher in Behavioural, Family and Development Economics.
