This degree weaves academic learning into the economics and finance context internationally and includes the option to take a valuable paid placement year where you'll be exposed to applying economics into action. You can choose to do short term internships in choice public, private and voluntary organisations such as government departments, financial sector, banks, risk and insurance sectors, investment and broking firms, retail and manufacturing firms, start-ups and charities among many others.

Over the duration of this course, you will be introduced to Micro and Macro-economic theories in the first year, followed by advanced training in the second and third years. There will be an emphasis on examining how Micro and Macro-economic theories are being applied in real world situations and you'll explore essential quantitative techniques that underlie Micro- and Macro- Economics.
You'll gain an understanding in the fundamentals underlying statistical analysis of data and learn key economic/financial concepts, theories and techniques, as well as the ability to apply these to financial issues. You'll investigate theories of exchange rate and balance of payments, and apply financial tools to manage international financial assets and exchange rate risks. You'll also be applying modern investment theory and practice, and incorporating a study of portfolio theory as the basis for contextualising challenges in investment decision-making.
As well as in-depth understanding of Financial Economics, you will also gain transferable skills such as communication and computational skills.

The internship module gives you the opportunity to undertake a period of work experience for a minimum of 30 days. This will facilitate you to gain an insight into the world of work and appropriate conduct at work, and the process of becoming and staying employable through assertiveness, continuing development and reflection on both your development and the link between theory and practice. You will also develop an understanding of the organisation, sector and the environment in which it operates.

Optional modules are usually available at levels 5 and 6, although optional modules are not offered on every course. Where optional modules are available, you will be asked to make your choice during the previous academic year. If we have insufficient numbers of students interested in an optional module, or there are staffing changes which affect the teaching, it may not be offered. If an optional module will not run, we will advise you after the module selection period when numbers are confirmed, or at the earliest time that the programme team make the decision not to run the module, and help you choose an alternative module.
This course will give you the subject knowledge as well as the transferable skills that are highly sought after by employers. Typical job roles available could be Analyst, Director, Manager, Teacher or Administrator in private business or public bodies like the NHS.
