You’ll have the option of either taking a 36-week sandwich placement in your third year, as part of a four-year degree, or two 18 week summer placements that’ll allow you to complete the degree in three years.

What will you study on the BA Human Resource Management?

Over the three years you will develop key human resource skills in planning, organisation and control. You will gain a detailed understanding of the organisational, commercial and societal factors that effect how companies work. Alongside studying introductory modules in human resource management and organisational behaviour, you will select from a range of advanced modules covering: sourcing and development staff, employee relations, engagement and reward management and contemporary issues in HR.

We ensure our students graduate with a wealth of additional, transferable skills including: excellent interpersonal skills and a thorough understanding of both individual and team behaviour.


  • Year 1

    • Applications and Research in Management (30 Credits) - Compulsory

      This module provides an interesting and enjoyable introduction to basic statistical, research, and ICT methods for the collection, analysis and presentation of business data. You will be required to do calculations by hand and use appropriate software though the emphasis is on the interpretation and communication of results.

    • Introduction to Human Resource Management (30 credits) - Compulsory

      The aim is to introduce you to the key areas of Human Resource Management (HRM) and to prepare you for studying key areas of HRM in greater depth during Year 2. By the end of the year you will be familiar with the development of HRM and have a basic understanding of a wide range of generalist HR policies and practices within the five key areas of the discipline employee resourcing, employee reward, performance management, employee relations, and employee training and development.

    • Management and Organisations (30 credits) - Compulsory

      This module is designed to equip you with a rounded view of business and its internal environment as well as the basic principles of management. This module will provide you with the context for future study of discipline based and/or function based business modules. The module will focus attention on the internal business environment and introduce you to the decision-making characteristics of business as well as introducing you to the business functional areas and how they inter-relate.

    • Work, Business and the External Environment (30 credits) - Compulsory

      This module introduces the international business context and how it affects work and employment issues in organisations. Latest ways of working and new production paradigms in a globalised economy are examined, as are the effects of cross-national cultural, public policy and industrial relations structures on people management in different country contexts.

  • Year 2

    • Employee Relations, Engagement and Reward Management (30 credits) - Compulsory

      This module will allow you to understand the components of, and links between, employment relations, employee engagement and reward strategies, and their contribution to sustainable organisational performance. As a HR Professional, you will need to appreciate the theoretical and practical aspects of seeking to fit these areas within the changing context that an organisation operates within. You also need to consider and evaluate emergent ideas and practices. You will be provided with opportunities to participate and reflect on their experiences, applying these to theory. This module matches the intermediate CIPD units on Employee Engagement, Contemporary Developments in Employee Relations and Reward Management.

    • People Resourcing and Development (30 credits) - Compulsory

      This module explores employee resourcing and development. More specifically it considers a variety of issues surrounding the operational and strategic aspects of HR planning, recruitment, selection, retention, individual and organisational learning and development, and performance management. It equips learners with the knowledge and skills required for designing effective employee resourcing and development strategies within a global business context. It is aligned to CIPD intermediate unit narratives. This module will also host the 2nd year HR professional development workshop series.

    • Work and Organisational Behaviour (30 credits) - Compulsory

      During this module, you will be introduced to the idea of management as a function and how people in organisations can be effectively managed by gaining understanding of their behaviours. However, the module will go beyond these functionalist and managerialist approaches by actively questioning the rationale of management. You will be introduced to classical theories in organisational behaviour and learn how to think about them more critically by recognising their limitations.

    • Consumer Behaviour (30 credits) - Optional

      The aim of this module is to enable you to learn factors that influence consumer behaviour; how we buy, what we buy, why we buy. Relevant theories of consumer behaviour will be explored and critiqued to explain these behaviours.

    • Human Resource Management in a Global Context (30 credits) - Optional

      This module builds upon knowledge gained in Year 1 on the business environment and the general management functions operating within organisations. You will develop an understanding of the international context of dealing with people issues in organisations.

    • Operations Management (30 credits) - Optional

      This module aims to broaden and expand your knowledge of the concepts and techniques required for the design, operation and control of business processes. Cases and practical exercises are relevant to a variety of commercial, manufacturing and service organisations. The module builds on the IT and quantitative skills developed in Year 1.

  • Year 3

    • Contemporary Issues in Human Resource Management (30 credits) - Compulsory

      This module builds upon knowledge gained about general business functions, organisational behaviour and the broad scope of responsibilities covered by the human resources function in an organisation and explores, in more depth and on a critical basis, some current trends and controversies in human resource management. This module is aligned to CIPD intermediate unit narratives. This module will also host the 3rd-year HR professional development workshop series.

    • Leadership and Management Development (30 credits) – Compulsory

      This module aims to provide grounding in the core competencies related to management and leadership in organisations, enabling you to apply theory to practice in management and leadership development. Alongside this, it will provide opportunities to develop personal skills through workshops in leadership and team building. This module is aligned to CIPD intermediate unit narratives.

    • Strategic Management (30 credits) - Compulsory

      This module aims to present a broad and integrated view of strategic management in organisations and outline a range of critical perspectives on key concepts of strategy. It will introduce generic strategies at the corporate, business and functional levels and provide a range of analytical models and concepts that can be applied in assessing the strategic capability of an organisation and the environment in which it operates.

    • Equality Diversity and Inclusion (30 credits) - Optional

      The aim of this module is to promote greater awareness and understanding of the importance of diversity issues from both a national and international perspective. This module also provides insight to the implications of diversity from a societal, organisational, and employee standpoint. A range of diversity debates, concepts and practices regarding equality, fairness and inclusion are also explored. This is used as a means for endorsing the significance of diversity management to careers and business sustainability and success. A variety of topics are covered including cross-cultural management, gender disparity, age perception, disability awareness, effective multicultural teamworking, and diversity legislation.

    • Facilitating Creativity in Business (30 credits) - Optional

      This module aims to explore ways of developing creativity and innovation at work, from an individual, team and organisational level. The focus will be on recognising and unleashing your latent creative potential, becoming more creative, and facilitating teams to uncover more of their creative potential. It will develop your skills in building work environments which will release your creative energy and the energy of those whom you work with. This module will introduce you to the knowledge and skills needed to facilitate creativity in workplace. It draws upon the literature and the experiences of creative practitioners to examine the wide range of principles and practices which can be utilised in fostering a creative attitude at work.

    • Managing Individual and Organisational Change (30 credits) - Optional

      This module builds on personal effectiveness developed in prior study to provide a bridge between University and future careers and further develops the strategic role of the HR practitioner to enable them to implement specific organisational change related to the management of people.

    • Research Project (30 credits) - Optional

      This module provides an excellent opportunity for you to demonstrate high quality employability skills such as the ability to design and deliver a small research project, learn independently and through supervision, and undertake an extended, methodical piece of work. A well-executed research project will give you something to distinguish yourself from your peers as well as the opportunity to show why you might be a superior candidate for graduate employment.

    • The Service Encounter (30 credits) - Optional

      This module builds upon knowledge and skills gained about general business functions and their impact on work. It explores, in more depth and on a critical basis, the interrelationship of the workplace and individuals in the organisation of services. It looks at contemporary issues unique to the organisation of work within services, including management approaches to control, the interaction between customer and service provider at the point of delivery and the role of aesthetics in service provision.

    • Work Internship (30 credits) - Optional

      The primary aim of the internship module is to provide you with the opportunity to undertake a period of work experience for a minimum of 30 days. This will facilitate you to gain an insight into, the world of work and appropriate conduct at work, and the process of becoming and staying employable through assertiveness, continuing development and reflection on both your development and the link between theory and practice. You will also develop an understanding of the organisation, sector and the environment in which it operates.

You can find more information about this course in the programme specification. Optional modules are usually available at levels 5 and 6, although optional modules are not offered on every course. Where optional modules are available, you will be asked to make your choice during the previous academic year. If we have insufficient numbers of students interested in an optional module, or there are staffing changes which affect the teaching, it may not be offered. If an optional module will not run, we will advise you after the module selection period when numbers are confirmed, or at the earliest time that the programme team make the decision not to run the module, and help you choose an alternative module.

How can the BA Human Resource Management support your career?

Additionally, you can go on to do further study. The main course that our HR graduates are now undertaking is MA Human Resource Management, where you can also specialise in Employment Law, Human Resource Development and Employment Relations.

Some examples of the types of careers that you could pursue after graduating with us include;

Human Resources (HR) Officer
Human resources officers, also known as personnel officers, develop, advise on and implement policies relating to the effective use of staff within an organisation. Your work will usually involve staff recruitment, employee record keeping, staff training and development, counselling staff, dealing with grievances and disciplinary procedures, promoting equal opportunities, health and safety and dealing with staff pay, benefits, redundancy and employment.

Employee Relations Officer
As an employee relations officer you will advise on employment matters including the interpretation of legislation, company policies and their application. Your role will be to maintain good employee relations and, where necessary, support investigatory and disciplinary hearings. You will also assist with other HR projects as and when requested and contribute to the development of HR policies and procedures.

Training and Development Officer/Manager
The role of a training and development officer/manager is to liaise with managers in identifying staff training needs, and creatively design bespoke training programmes that help to maintain a motivated and skilled workforce.

Recruitment Consultant
As a recruitment consultant you work on behalf of employer clients to recruit staff for job vacancies. You will provide advice to both clients and candidates on salary levels, training requirements and career opportunities. Developing solid relationships with clients is essential to the role.

    I really enjoy working with people which makes HRM the perfect course choice. I like that it is a fairly broad subject that covers many aspects of business and it deals primarily with people.

    As I have already completed the first two years of my degree, I have started building a base of experience with people focused skills as I act as a Student Learning Assistant. In this role I help second year students with the subjects I excelled in; I also participate in a student buddying scheme organised by the Students' Union.

    There are many different nationalities and cultures represented at Middlesex and I am able to take advantage of a unique opportunity to develop global perspectives.
