Designed to build on your previous business foundation course or HND, you’ll have the option to study across one or two years to achieve your BA in business administration – with the latter including a year-long industry work placement. You’ll develop the essential business and administration skills to work across a wide range of private and public sector companies and gain the confidence to apply your knowledge across all disciplines.

Covering all aspects of international business administration, you’ll also have the opportunity – through our dedicated workshops – to develop your business writing and professional communication skills to further enhance your CV.

What will you study on the BA International Business Administration (Top-up)?

Alongside building effective business skills you will develop your knowledge of organisations; their functions, structure and management. You will study the environment of international business encompassing different cultures and learn how stakeholders and partners engage in an international context.

Through structured modules you will learn to interpret business reports and evaluate performance, and build knowledge of key management tools and techniques within a global context. You will also select from a range of optional modules so you can tailor your studies to your interests.

You will learn to work effectively in teams, and be able to present and communicate business administration ideas with confidence in a global marketplace. We will also support you to put together a career development plan to ensure you can work towards your goals effectively.

Modules

  • Year 2

    • Human Resource Management in Practice (30 credits) - Compulsory

      The aim is to introduce non-HR specialist students to the key areas of HRM and to build on relevant knowledge and skills developed in introductory organisational behaviour modules. By the end of the module, you will be familiar with a wide range of generalist HR policies and practices within the five key areas of the discipline - employee resourcing, employee reward, performance management employee relations, and employee training and development.

    • Accounting & Finance for Business (30 credits) - Compulsory

      This module aims to further develop and enhance the financial understanding and knowledge of students within business organisations on the subject areas of financial accounting, management accounting and financial management. It aims to provide a more in-depth understanding of the roles of accounting and finance for business students who do not need to develop specialist knowledge and to train students to apply their accounting and finance knowledge and skills into a range of different business situations.

    • Operations Management (30 credits) - Compulsory

      This module aims to broaden and expand your knowledge of the concepts and techniques required for the design, operation and control of business processes. Cases and practical exercises are relevant to a variety of commercial, manufacturing and service organisations. The module builds on the IT and quantitative skills developed in the first year.

    • Marketing Research and Insights (30 credits) - Compulsory

      This module aims to familiarise students with the importance of marketing research and insights to business and, in particular, the marketing management process. Students will learn how to conduct a marketing research project, including establishing business research needs, gaining insights into the consumer market, designing an appropriate research design, creating research instruments, gathering data primary and secondary data, conducting both qualitative and quantitative data analysis, and using the findings to improve marketing decision-making.

  • Year 3

    • Global Business Strategy (30 credits) - Compulsory

      This module introduces the main concepts, analytical tools and theoretical frameworks in the field of global business strategy. You'll explore the general strategic concepts and theories of internationalisation, and then draw together and integrate knowledge and skills that you have learned previously, applying these to the issues that are typically faced by organisations when they operate internationally. You'll develop your awareness to and sensitivity of the differences between global, international and domestic business, and improve your analytical, critical and problem solving abilities.

    • International and Cross-cultural Marketing (30 credits) – Compulsory

      This module introduces current theory and practice in international marketing and develops your ability to apply cultural concepts to marketing challenges. You'll learn about new cultures in both the developed and emerging world and how to adapt marketing strategies accordingly for business success.

    • International Finance (30 credits) - Compulsory

      This module aims to provide you with the theories of exchange rate and balance of payments, and skills of managing international financial assets and exchange rate risks in a global environment. You will have the opportunity to study the operations of the world capital markets, grasp the principles essential to understanding of global financial issues and policies, and apply tools to effectively evaluate international risk in order to succeed in international financial environment.

    • Global Supply Chain Management (30 credits) - Optional

      This module provides an understanding of how to match global demand with global supply within the parameters of corporate and business unit strategies. You'll develop critical insights on design, implementation and operation of global supply chains while employing these to develop your own case studies.

    • International Leadership (30 credits) - Optional

      This module aims to critically evaluate theoretical perspectives on leadership, in particular the increasing interest and demand for authentic leadership. The module will explore the contextual complexity of and challenges to leadership effectiveness in the 21st century. The module will give you the opportunity to apply theoretical concepts in order to develop your current practice.

Optional modules are usually available at levels 5 and 6, although optional modules are not offered on every course. Where optional modules are available, you will be asked to make your choice during the previous academic year. If we have insufficient numbers of students interested in an optional module, or there are staffing changes which affect the teaching, it may not be offered. If an optional module will not run, we will advise you after the module selection period when numbers are confirmed, or at the earliest time that the programme team make the decision not to run the module, and help you choose an alternative module.

How is the BA International Business Administration (Top-up) taught?

You will gain knowledge and understanding through guided reading of textbooks, journals and course notes; online exercises; lectures, workshops and seminars.

Assessment

Your knowledge and understanding is assessed by online objective tests, and written assignments..

Teaching and learning – changes for students in 2021

We are back on campus for the majority of teaching in Autumn 2021, as long as restrictions allow. Your timetable will be built around on campus sessions using our professional facilities, with online sessions for some activities where we know being virtual will add value. We’ll use technology to enhance all of your learning and give you access to online resources to use in your own time.

In case of any changes to government guidance, we‘ll be ready to move to teaching with more restrictions in place and continue to give you an excellent learning experience. In this scenario, on campus teaching should continue although more of your course will take place online.

The table below gives you an idea of what your learning will look like across a typical week. Some weeks might be different due to how we schedule classes and arrange on campus sessions.

This information may change slightly as we receive further guidance from the government. You’ll receive final arrangements for your teaching and a full course timetable before you start.

Outside of these hours, you’ll be expected to do independent study where you read, listen and reflect on other learning activities. This can include preparation for future classes. In a year, you’ll typically be expected to commit 1200 hours to your course across all styles of learning. If you are taking a placement, you might have some additional hours.

Future plans for teaching

We’re developing our plans for in-person on campus teaching following government advice to keep you safe. If more restrictions are put in place in the future, or there is another lockdown, we’ll deliver your learning and support fully online for a temporary period. We’ll make alternative arrangements for any required placements if they can’t go ahead as planned. We’ll always give you notice of any changes that we make.

Definitions of terms

  • Live in-person on campus learning – This will focus on active and experiential sessions that are both:
    • Led by your tutors including seminars, lab sessions and demonstrations We’ll schedule all of this for you
    • Student-led by you and other students, like small group work and presentations.
  • Live online learning – This will include lectures, tutorials and supervision sessions led by your tutor and timetabled by us. It also includes student-led group work that takes place online

  • Tutor set learning activities – This covers activities which will be set for you by your tutor, but which you will undertake in your own time. Examples of this include watching online materials, participating in an online discussion forum, completing a virtual laboratory or reading specific texts. You may be doing this by yourself of with your course mates depending on your course and assignments. Outside of these hours, you’ll also be expected to do further independent study where you’ll be expected to learn, prepare, revise and reflect in your own time.

Support

You’ll have a strong support network available to you to make sure you develop all the necessary academic skills you need to do well on your course.

Our support services will be delivered online and on campus and you’ll have access to a range of different resources so you can get the help you need, whether you’re studying at home or have the opportunity to come to campus.

You’ll have access to one to one and group sessions for personal learning and academic support from our library and IT teams, and our network of learning experts. Our teams will also be here to offer financial advice, and personal wellbeing, mental health and disability support.
