What will you study on the BA Learning and Teaching?

The one-year course develops your knowledge, skills and understanding of learning and teaching in a range of educational contexts including early years, primary, secondary and special education.

You'll study four modules which will all be assessed by coursework including research, written assignments, and presentations.

Modules

  • Modules - Compulsory

    • Contemporary Issues in Learning and Teaching (30 credits)

The aim of the module is to develop students’ professional knowledge and professionalism through their opportunities to critically engage with contemporary issues in education and to consider implications of these issues for practice.

The module aims to support students to explore and analyse the values and beliefs, which underpin policy and practice and, in so doing, reflect on their own evolving principles and practice.

Students will further develop their knowledge and understanding of diversity in relation to learning and teaching.

    • Education Research Project (30 credits)

The aim of the module is to foster a critical and questioning approach to research in education.

The module provides an opportunity for students to undertake substantial independent research in a relevant chosen area and enables students to experience the research process in a systematic and supervised way.

Through managing and executing a research project, students deepen their learning and develop the ability to analyse data and interpret information to draw conclusions and to promote their ability to conduct subsequent research, which is pertinent to their professional practice.

    • Professional Practice in Learning and Teaching (30 credits)

The aim of the module is to develop students’ effectiveness within the workplace through consideration of key aspects of their professional practice in relation to the area of learning and teaching.

Students review their professional development; they identify personal strengths and consider ways in which they can enhance their role in practice.

The module provides students with an opportunity to explore theoretical ideas about reflective practice and consider reasons for using critical reflection to inform and develop practice.

    • Learning without Limits (30 credits)

This module aims to provide students with opportunities to develop broad knowledge and understanding of teaching and learning across the curriculum.

Students will have opportunities to critically engage with creative, innovative and inclusive pedagogical approaches that offer children meaningful and relevant learning experiences.

Students will consider the implications of diverse approaches to practice for learners and for their own professional practice and development.

How we'll teach you

You will learn using a range of learning, teaching and assessment approaches that put you at the centre of your learning. Some of the time you will work independently and at others with your fellow students.

Most seminar groups have about 20-30 students. We will support you with a range of online tools, with flexible access and the opportunity to develop skills that are not only essential for your learning but are also highly valued by employers.

Work is divided into credits of approximately 10 hours of study time. You will need to complete 120 credits per year, which are broken down into modules of 30 credits.

Where will I study?

You will be studying at our north London campus in Hendon.

Timetable

Whether you are studying full or part-time – your course timetable will balance your study commitments on campus with time for work, life commitments and independent study.

  • 6 hours of seminars

Independent learning

Outside of teaching hours, you’ll learn independently through self-study which will involve reading articles and books, working on projects, undertaking research, and preparing for assessments including coursework, presentations and exams.

Coursework and assessments

Your learning will be assessed regularly and is made up of 100% coursework.

Assessments

We'll test your understanding and progress with informal and formal tests.

The informal tests usually take place at least once per module, from which you’ll receive feedback from your tutor. The grades from these tests don’t count towards your final marks.

There are formal assessments for each module, usually at the end, which will count towards your module and your final marks.

Assessments are reviewed annually and may be updated based on student feedback or feedback from an external examiner.

To help you achieve the best results, we will provide regular feedback.

We offer lots of support to help you while you're studying including financial advice, wellbeing, mental health, and disability support.

How can the BA in Learning and Teaching support your career?

Our course will qualify you to progress to postgraduate study and if you wish to become a qualified teacher, then you can apply for an Initial Teacher Training (ITT) course as a route to gaining Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), such as the PGCE courses we run (although you are not guaranteed a place).
