Here is a brief overview of what you will study over three years:
Year 1
You will be focusing on building a foundation of knowledge around the normal aspects of pregnancy, birth and postnatal care.
Year 2
You will be focussing on developing knowledge around complexities in pregnancy, birth and postnatal care.
Year 3
This year focusses on consolidating the care given in pregnancy, birth and postnatal care.
Through your three years of study, key modules will provide the necessary theory to meet Nursing and Midwifery Council standards of proficiency for midwifery, which include anatomy and physiology/pathophysiology, cultural and psychosocial issues, and interprofessional working, legal and ethical issues.
During your time in clinical practice (on placement) you will experience the midwife's role in a professional context. Working shifts across a 24/7 care plan, you will develop your understanding of the needs and experiences of women and babies within a clinical setting.
Your learning will be integrated with other students from our Faculty of Health, Social Care and Education to share your learning with other midwifery, nursing and social work students.

You will be able to demonstrate the ability to work autonomously in the child health field of practice caring for all people across the lifespan with a range of physical, mental, cognitive and behavioural challenges. You will display advanced clinical skills and have the ability to integrate leadership in all aspects of care management. You will utilise a critical and reflective approach in delivering high standards of professional conduct in line with the NMC Code as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
This module aims to introduce you to undertaking the examination of the newborn infant from birth to 6-8 weeks of age. The module will provide the foundations of knowledge and practical skills to empower you in being able to undertake the initial examination and daily examination of newborn infants under direct supervision.
The aim of this module is for you to gain a foundation of knowledge and skills that enable them to care for women, under supervision, during normal labour and birth. The focus of this module is on the physiological birth process and the associated midwifery care. A grounding in the related anatomy and physiology is included. An emphasis on how physiology can be supported and promoted forms an integral part of this module.
This module aims to provide you with a broad insight into maternal changes during pregnancy and the postnatal period. It will help you develop an understanding of a woman’s support structures as well as their needs during pregnancy and the postnatal period thus informing your supervised provision of midwifery care in a variety of settings.
This module aims to develop the your practical skills and practice-based knowledge, including care planning and decision-making. It will enable you to expand your study skills to include searching literature and critiquing research to provide evidence-based practice. Furthermore, you will explore the wider contexts of health and implications for maternity care within a multidisciplinary team.
This module aims to build on Foundations of Children and Young People's Nursing Knowledge and will develop the theoretical and practical knowledge to allow you to continue to validate normality. You will begin to recognise and identify abnormalities and/or potential problems to inform the parents and professionals and prepare for the required care.
This module aims to develop the your knowledge and skills in caring for women, under supervision, in labour with complex needs. The emphasis of this module is on deviations from the normal birth process. This module will enable you to build on their existing knowledge around the normal birth process and apply it to women experiencing complexity in labour. An introduction to pharmacology will also be incorporated.
This module aims to develop your expertise in the provision of multifactorial midwifery care in a variety of settings. It will enable you to analyse, plan and evaluate care provided for the mother during pregnancy and the postnatal period where there are complex needs.
This module aims to embed the knowledge and skills of previous years and to apply them to more complex situations, including any legal and ethical considerations. This will enable you to become safe, accountable and autonomous practitioners, performing advanced skills with minimal supervision. The module will enable you to recognise your own role in ensuring effective team working, the contribution you make to the quality and safety of maternity care and the importance of continuing professional development.
This module aims to enable future practitioners to undertake the examination of the newborn infant from birth to 6-8 weeks of age. The theoretical and practical knowledge builds on previous modules and enables the student to confirm normality, identify abnormalities and/or potential problems in order that the parents, and other professionals can be informed and prepared for the required care. This will enable the provision of a framework of practice and will empower the student to practice in an autonomous role as lead professional within the care of the newborn.
This module aims to develop and consolidate your expertise in providing midwifery care for women experiencing complex situations during labour and birth. A focus on equipping students with the necessary knowledge and skills to deal with obstetric emergencies is integral to this module. Existing pharmacology skills and knowledge will be built upon. Preparation for independent practice is included.
This module aims to develop your expertise in maternity care and its provision as you prepare for an independent role. In addition, it will explore some of the politics around motherhood, feeding and maternity care both nationally and internationally.

You will be taught by experienced midwives who have expertise, knowledge and professional experience that is closely aligned with the course content.

The degree is split equally between theory and practice. Clinical experience and practical simulations will form an important part of your learning. You will observe what to do, do it yourself and then improve your practice through feedback. You will have your own caseload of women and will be supported by a mentor. Practice supervisors and practice assessors will support your learning in the maternity setting and wider healthcare environment.
Seminars and workshops are a great opportunity to discuss what you have learnt with your peers and tutors. Most seminar groups have about 45-50 students.
You will learn clinical skills through practical demonstrations and enquiry-based learning. You will also do clinical practice-based learning on placement in your allocated Health Trust.
For one-to-one support, you will meet with either your personal tutor, academic advisor or module leader. We will also share our library of online resources including an online module-specific core textbook (Kortex) and other digital learning materials.
Your work will be divided into credits. Each credit is equal to 10 hours of study time. You will complete 120 credits per year of study, which are broken down into modules of typically 30 credits.
During the periods of clinical practice you will be supported by qualified midwives and link tutors will visit each Trust frequently offering reflective sessions, practice and general support, throughout your course.
You will be studying at our north London campus in Hendon at our West Stand facilities at StoneX stadium, Barnet and at your local hospital placement.
There is a free shuttle bus service you can use to get to StoneX park from our Hendon campus.
For the first time in the UK, midwifery students are using Microsoft’s HoloLens technology as part of their training. Our students are shown virtual reality images of what is happening inside the anatomy, with the aim to teach them about all the obstetric emergencies that could occur. Whether you are studying full or part-time – your course timetable will balance your study commitments on campus with time for work, life commitments and independent study.
We aim to make timetables available to students at least 2 weeks before the start of term. Some weeks are different due to how we schedule classes and arrange on-campus sessions.

On-campus: This includes tutor-led sessions such as seminars, lab sessions and demonstrations as well as student-led sessions for work in small groups.
Online learning: This is teaching that is delivered online using tools like Skype or Zoom, as well as work that you do yourself using online teaching resources.
Independent study: This is the work you do in your own time including reading and research. Your independent learning is supported by the library and study hub, laptop hire, and with online materials in MyUniHub.
Our excellent teaching and support teams will help you develop your skills from research and practical skills to critical thinking. Our Sheppard Library is open 24 hours a day during term time. And we offer free 24-hour laptop loans with full desktop software, free printing and Wi-Fi to use on or off campus.
We'll test your understanding and progress with informal and formal assessments.
The informal tests usually take place at least once per module, from which you’ll receive feedback from your tutor. The grades from these tests don’t count towards your final marks.
There are formal assessments for each module, usually at the end. These are designed to measure what you have learned during the module and will count towards your module and your final marks.
Assessment methods could include clinical assessments in our clinical skills department, case study assessments online, and the EMORA – the clinical document for maternity assessment in practice.
Assessments are reviewed annually and may be updated based on student feedback or feedback from an external examiner.

We have about 220 pre-registration midwifery students out on placement at any one time. Many of our students go on to get their first job after graduation at their placement locations.
The course is 50% theory and 50% practice. You will need to obtain 4600 hours (theory and placement) over three years to qualify as a midwife.

Jo's nursing experience as a qualified RGN involved gastrointestinal surgery at the Royal Free Hospital until she decided to pursue a career in Midwifery. Jo’s key educational interest is to encourage student midwives to promote methodical evidence based culture in their everyday care.
