COVID-19 update

During the current pandemic some aspects of the timing and method of delivery of the programme below may be subject to changes. For example, theoretical face to face teaching may be replaced by online delivery if circumstances such as a second wave of infections require this and practical flying schedules may be suspended or delayed.

However, you will be kept fully informed of any such changes that may be necessary by the team at Tayside Aviation. The assessment processes would not be affected, and students would be required to pass the assessments in order to progress.

When you have completed levels 4 and 5 and achieved your CPL progression to the final modules (3 &4) at level 6 depends on you being employed as a commercial airline pilot or Flight Instructor.

The current situation in aviation caused by the pandemic may mean that progression into employment at this stage may be delayed. If this is the case your programme will be interrupted (i.e. frozen) and restarted when you have secured employment.

A path to a career as a flight instructor and airline pilot

Through a partnership with Tayside Aviation Ltd, our aviation course lets you gain an academic qualification while you develop the technical and practical flying training to begin the exciting first stages of your career as a professional.

Becoming a flight instructor and commercial airline pilot are big challenges and this course provides the opportunity to gain experience in both. In partnership with Tayside Aviation, the premier airline training company in Scotland, you’ll study and carry out pilot training in Dundee.

This course is designed to allow you to study towards your degree while undertaking pilot training. The programme is fully integrated into the initial stages of your career as a flight instructor and commercial pilot.

Incorporating Civil Aviation Authority training, by the end of your second year you'll have gained significant experience as a flight instructor. In year 3 of the degree you can opt to complete the degree by following the flight instructor route or by following the commercial airline route. In both cases you will be actively working as a pilot.

Building your theoretical and practical flying knowledge

At the start of the programme, you'll join Tayside Aviation Ltd and begin the Ground School. You will be building on your existing skills and knowledge having entered the degree with a Private Pilot’s Licence (PPL). Through our blended learning approach, you’ll combine knowledge and learning to develop the skills you’ll need when you’re a commercial pilot.

Using a variety of media and online tools, you’ll have access to a host of tools and applications so you can learn through online workshops, blogs, podcasts and more.

You’ll be assessed for your theoretical knowledge as well as practically assessed in your flying training modules. You’ll get the support and guidance you need to gain your frozen air transport pilots licence (ATPL (F)) as part of your course.

The degree programme has been designed to meet the requirements of partner airlines, you’ll gain an aviation qualification as a Flight Instructor as part of your course.

This course is endorsed by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

Get the support you need to succeed

Our personalised approach gives you the support you need to succeed as a student. While you are an undergraduate or foundation year student, you’ll have a Personal Tutor directly related to your course. If you need support with academic writing, numeracy and library skills, we’ll be sure to provide it. Our Student Learning and Graduate Academic Assistants have studied your subject and can support you based on their own experience.

Depending on your personal interests and career ambitions, you’ll have the unique opportunity to follow one of two employment routes during your final year of study – First Officer or Flight Training Instructor.
