The health sector needs highly qualified nurses with the ability to analyse practice and evidence as well as be aware of the latest research and best care for their patients. This programme is designed specifically to provide a pathway to top-up your academic qualifications to achieve a BSc degree in Professional Studies (Nursing). It can be studied on a full or part time basis and will enable you to develop critical thinking and problem solving skills for developing your professional practice.
This one year top-up course is designed for qualified and registered nurses who wish to build upon their theory and academic qualifications. The topics studied are broad and will equip already practising nurses the underpinning knowledge to expand their skills, their practice and career opportunities.
Upon graduation, you will have wide variety of opportunities from postgraduate courses in nursing and midwifery to progressing to masters and doctoral routes within nursing.
Please note, this course is open to students requiring a Tier 4 visa, but does not offer professional registration within nursing in the UK.

As well as developing your critical thinking and decision making, you will also gain the ability to reflect and analyse your own performance. You will have research analysis and evaluating skills and will focus on the facilitation of learning and communication to a range of audiences including students, peers and clients.
Through this module you will gain the knowledge, skills and attitudes which will enable you to provide culturally appropriate nursing care to patients, clients and service users, which is compassionate, empowering, and respectful of their human rights.
This module aims to introduce a range of issues and equip you with the relevant theoretical grounding and key analytical skills in order to analyse and inform clinical decision making. All forms of health and social care involve some degree of value judgement, and there have always been ethical dilemmas associated with the delivery of care. The development of technology and the advance of science have only increased these dilemmas. New ideas are challenging established practices and long-cherished beliefs are being scrutinised and questioned.
This module seeks to provide the skills and knowledge required to explore and examine your role within health promotion at individual, local, national and international levels. You will explore the concepts of health and of health promotion including your own philosophies. There will be a focus on differing agendas (including those on screening), inequalities of health, social capital, strategies for change, resourcing and health improvement plans.
This module is aimed at nurses, midwives and other healthcare professionals qualified for a minimum of one year. You will develop an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the role of the mentor and be able to apply this in clinical practice.
This module aims to synthesise learning from your undergraduate degree programme providing an opportunity for you to study independently and investigate a topic in depth. It fosters academic curiosity, an inquiry based approach and the employment and application of research skills, thus facilitating the development of a higher level of theorising.

Where optional modules are available, you will be asked to make your choice during the previous academic year. If we have insufficient numbers of students interested in an optional module, or there are staffing changes which affect the teaching, it may not be offered. If an optional module will not run, we will advise you after the module selection period when numbers are confirmed, or at the earliest time that the programme team make the decision not to run the module, and help you choose an alternative module.
As you will be a professional practitioner with significant prior learning, you will be taught via an adult learning approach. The modules use a variety of approaches that will encourage you to be responsible for your own learning and progress. It is recognised that individuals learn in different ways therefore a range of teaching and learning strategies are used. Discussion, scenario work, and pre and post sessional work are also important components of the modules that you will be required to engage in.
Assessment aims to deepen and enhance your learning. A range of approaches will be used including written assignment, portfolios, digital presentations and demonstrations.
Although you will be in current employment, successful completion of the programme may rapidly expand your career opportunities into specialist and leadership roles, and allow you the opportunity to undertake postgraduate studies. Career opportunities may include senior clinical positions, research nurse, consultant nurse or clinical manager.
