Join our one-day conference about gender awareness and inclusivity

Based upon years of research into gender and childhood, Prof. Jayne Osgood (Middlesex University) advised the production of the 2018 BAFTA nominated documentary 'No More Boys & Girls: can our kids go gender free?' (BBC2). She then subsequently contributed to a book aimed at teachers, that built upon the success of the series: ‘The Equal Classroom: life changing thinking about gender’, 2020).

Following the interest amongst teachers in these recent projects, Middlesex University is committed to incorporating greater gender awareness into its teaching programmes with the aim of improving practice and developing approaches to gender inclusivity in Early Years and Primary education. As part of this work, Middlesex University is extending an invitation to early years and primary school teachers (those in training, NQTs, as well as more established professionals) to a one-day event. The day will include presentations by keynote speakers:

  • Professor Jayne Osgood (gender and childhood expert at Middlesex University)
  • Graham Andre (teacher featured in the BBC documentary)
  • Catherine Fraser-Adams (teacher and recent graduate of MA Gender & Sexualities who has altered her school policy and practice to be more gender inclusive).

The day is intended to be very interactive with workshops/break-out sessions, as well as ample space for lively discussion. Participants are invited to consider gender related issues that they encounter in their practice and to consider changes that could be made in their classrooms to better address them. All participants will need to complete a brief pre-conference questionnaire about their current approaches to gender in the classroom, and a follow up questionnaire at the end of the school term.

The event is free to attend, and a heavily discounted copy of 'The Equal Classroom' will be included as part of the conference pack. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.
