Event postponed

At Middlesex, we take the health and wellbeing of our staff, students and guests seriously. Unfortunately, we have had to take the decision to postpone the Gender, Race and Power in Science panel event. We have been following UK government guidelines and working with the rolling advice from the public health authorities and other organisations, and so it is with reluctance that we have taken the decision not to go ahead with this event on Friday 13 March. We will rearrange and promote the event when we confirm the new date.

About

Join us at this panel event where we will be exploring why racial and gender stereotypes still persist within the sciences and beyond.

At this panel event, Angela Saini, Science Journalist and award-winning author of 'Superior: The Return of Race Science' (Fourth Estate, 2019) and 'Inferior: How Science Got Women Wrong' (HarperCollins, 2017) alongside senior academics in the biological, physical and social sciences at Middlesex University will discuss how the field is characterised by power relations based on gender and race. The implications of this for larger anti-racist efforts within universities and beyond will also be discussed, and what hope there is for a more inclusive way of ‘doing’ science.

Kurt Barling, Professor of Journalism at Middlesex University and author of 'The R Word' (Biteback Publishing, 2015) will chair what will be an illuminating and inspiring discussion. Joining him on the panel from Middlesex University will be Professor Mehmet Karamanoglu, Head of Department of Design Engineering and Mathematics, Professor Mandeep Dhami, Professor in Decision Psychology and Dr Rima Saini, Lecturer in Sociology and co-convenor of the British Sociological Association Race & Ethnicity Study Group .

The panel event will be followed by a reception where there will be an opportunity to talk to the panellists and network. For further information about this event please contact Dr Rima Saini or Professor Mehmet Karamanoglu.

Registration for the event is encouraged.
