In this multi-media talk plus Q&A, Kit Ashton presents and explores some perspectives on the relationship between music, cultural identity, and language ideology by drawing on his PhD fieldwork in Jersey.
Kit is currently completing his CHASE-funded PhD in Music at Goldsmiths College, University of London, supervised by Dr Barley Norton and Prof. Keith Negus. His research investigates how applied ethnomusicology can help revitalise endangered languages, with a focus on the critically endangered language of Jèrriais in his home island of Jersey. Kit
has broad experience in popular music, music education, and ethnomusicology. His current band, Badlabecques, uniquely sing in the language of Jèrriais. Kit is also a filmmaker and vlogger, with his own musicology-themed YouTube channel, ‘Kit Ashton Musicology’.
