Mauritius and European Union Law Forum

Organised under the aegis of the Jean Monnet Chair awarded to Professor Pech, Middlesex University will host a legal forum dedicated to issues of common interest relevant to Mauritius and the European Union

The Mauritius and EU Law Forum will offer a unique opportunity to hear leading legal voices reflect on topical and critical issues such as the importance of good governance, the relationship between the rule of law and economic development, and the role of competition law in an open market economy.

The two-day event will include a session dedicated to EU funding opportunities for higher education institutions and scholars established in Mauritius on 19 July. There will also be an opportunity for junior academics to present their research and receive feedback from a panel of EU law professors.

Speakers will include:

  • Dr Arvin Boolell, GOSK, former Foreign Minister
  • Carla Osorio, Chargé d'Affaires at the Delegation of the EU to the Republic of Mauritius, the Union of the Comoros and the Republic of Seychelles
  • Professor Ioannis Lianos, Director of the Centre for Law, Economics and Society at University College London
  • Professor Dimitry Kochenov, Chair of EU Constitutional Law, Department of European and Economic Law, University of Groningen
  • Prof Tim Blackman, Vice Chancellor at Middlesex University
  • Prof Laurent PECH - Jean Monnet Chair of EU Public Law, Head of the Law and Politics Department at the Middlesex University, London
  • Prof Joshua CASTELLINO - Dean of the School of Law at Middlesex University, London & Chairperson of the United Nations Forum on minority issues

The conference will address the following topics:

  • The relationship between good governance, the rule of law and economic development
  • The importance of judicial accountability and independence
  • The objectives and benefits of competition law in an open market economy
  • Challenges for competition law and policy in Mauritius
  • Competition within the legal professions and the competitiveness of Mauritius’ Legal Sector
  • EU support for regional integration processes with a focus on the Indian Ocean
  • Regional cooperation in the Indian Ocean and the Indian Ocean Commission’s relationship with the EU
  • The possible contribution of the EU towards meeting the UN goals of sustainable development in the Indian Ocean
  • EU cooperation and funding opportunities
