Middlesex University, the Burroughs, London, NW4 4BT
In a collaboration with SMASHfestUK and The Royal Academy of Engineering, Super Volcano is the theme of our Big Draw festival, as we explore how we can employ drawing and science to protect and rebuild our world.
The Family Day on Friday 28th October will see staff and students from across the University inviting families to participate in creative activities, including drawing a touring menagerie of animals, making musical instruments from unlikely items and learning about survival in The Survival Village, all centred around our very own Super Volcano.
Activities are suitable for children aged five and over and, with engineering and virtual reality activities, there’s plenty for inquisitive adults too!
The introduction of the arts into the STEM agenda is the nationwide theme for this year’s Big Draw, providing the ideal opportunity for Middlesex to celebrate the creative crossovers between its Faculty of Arts and Creative Industries and Faculty of Science and Technology.
The Survival Village, run with the support of The Royal Academy of Engineering, will make its second appearance next year as part of SMASHfestUK from 15-17 February, a celebration of science for school-age children organised by Middlesex University academics.
“Drawing and thinking creatively are so important across the curriculum for children and adults alike. I’m delighted that we’ll be opening our doors for the local London community to create, draw and explore with us in the Grove building next month, after a week of activities for our own staff and students.” Andrew Pomphrey, Middlesex Big Draw coordinator and Senior Faculty Technician
