The Creative Academy Hub, backed by Middlesex University, has launched in London to help underrepresented individuals break into the creative industries.
We’ve partnered with the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan's Academies Programme to create the Creative Academy Hub, as part of our aim to promote fairer routes into creative careers. The Hub is here to support students from underrepresented communities in pursuing careers in the creative industries by offering skills training and education, plus access to top-notch equipment and studio space.
The courses are free to Londoners from under-represented and disadvantaged backgrounds including black and ethnic minorities, young people, people earning below the London living wage, those with disabilities, the over 50s, single parents, caregivers and the unemployed. Our skilled academics provide training in areas such as health and safety when working on sets, hair and make-up for film/TV and post-production. The Hub also helps connect students with people already working in the film, TV, animation, VFX and the games sector.
In 2022, the Mayor visited Nexus Studios, an independent production and animation studio in Shoreditch, East London, where he met with Middlesex University student Darryl Coulson.
Darryl, who wants to be a location manager, told the Mayor about how he has benefited massively from a work experience placement through his course as a runner on a set with the National Film and Television School.
“It was an absolute amazing experience to speak with the Mayor. I explained how I found it really inspirational being on set with a range of people from such different age groups, backgrounds and ethnicities.”

Edward McCaffrey, Senior Lecturer at Middlesex, says the focus on promoting fairer routes into creative careers has become an integrated part of the Media courses: “Our learnings from the Creative Academy Hub has been built into curriculums and brought to the class rooms through MDXworks. Industry links like these help to improve graduate employability.”
