Studying Social Work

What to look forward to

Learn through a mix of theory and practice in a course fully approved by Social Work England (SWE) and co-produced with service users across London.

You’ll be taught through a mix of practical workshops, theory-based classes, and your practice placement at one of our local authority placement partners.

Get equipped with the right skills and experience

Our BA Social Work course is focused on preparing you for practice through building both your hard skills and experience.

We do this through a combination of both theory-based modules and practical assignments and workshops.

You’ll analyse these activities in a reflective journal which you’ll use as a part of your research project in your final year. This focus on critical analysis of your own work and the theory you learn in classes, will help you to build the skills required to succeed in your career.

  • We're back on campus for teaching

Your timetable will be built around teaching time using our facilities on campus with online sessions for some activities where being virtual adds value. That means it’s not going to be like 2020 over again. We've combined the best of our pre-pandemic teaching with what's worked best for students while they've been learning at home.

We’ve planned your learning so it has most benefit for you:

    • You’ll be on campus for skills training and peer-review activities, which will help you develop your confidence in communication, case discussion, and more. This sessions will also be crucial in completing your “readiness for practice” assessment

    • You’ll be taught online through pre and post activities and discussion board, where you can connect your learning to key concepts.
  • Innovative teaching that's enhanced by technology

Our teaching and learning approach is evidence-based and designed using feedback from students and staff during the pandemic and in previous years. For example, our students particularly enjoyed how we made took our personalised approach into the online environment, through discussion boards and personal planning.

We also use technology to enhance your learning and put you in control, like polls, virtual whiteboards, and quizzes during lectures so you can interact live. Tech also allows us to add innovative new ways of teaching into the mix like how we've ensured that negotiated child observations can still happen in a virtual environment.

Build experience through our excellent placement partners

You’ll get to put the theory you learn in class to the test in your placement opportunities. You’ll undertake 170 days of work experience during your degree, at one of our outstanding placement partners in London.

We’ll support you through individualised tutoring sessions to explore the right placement for you as well as reflect on your experience and bring it back to the classroom.

We also offer several core modules to help prepare you for your placement and practice after graduation, so you can be comfortable on your first day of work.

These modules explore the Professional Capabilities Framework and the concept of professional development planning, a key aspect of your journey to becoming a social worker.

Learn from highly experienced tutors and service users

Our academic staff are a mix of highly respected researchers and experienced social workers. Whatever career path you choose to take, you’ll learn from the absolute best in the area who continue to bring their unique expertise to the classroom.

We also partner with service users, who both help to co-produce the course structure but also will run workshops and lectures for you to learn from the best.

You’ll see this expertise in action in several of our core modules that cover topics like the law and it’s impacts on social work or on the critical analysis of intervention and communication. All these modules will help you to develop your professional skills and set you up for success in your career.

From our focus on practical learning and our robust placement programme to our respected academic staff and service user partners, we know that studying social work at Middlesex University will prepare you for a successful career. No matter your specialism of interest or career goals, we are here to help you along your journey and ensure you are equipped to practice in an ever-changing world.
