Studying with us during coronavirus in 2021

Studying Dance

What to look forward to

Throughout your learning, you will discover your individuality through rigorous technique training, collaborative dance making, performance, and applied professional practice.

  • Reach your full creative potential in our facilities

We are a diverse team of industry/academic professionals who will support you throughout your studies.

A dynamic schedule of weekly practical classes in a variety of techniques will develop your skills and introduce you to a range of dance practices. Our dance technique provision includes training in contemporary techniques, ballet, urban and improvisation practices, many of which are accompanied by live musicians.

Your practical training will take place in our  four fully equipped dance studios  and our flagship Grove Dance Theatre, which has a seating capacity of 144, a specialist lighting rig and many more extras that facilitate an authentic professional environment, including dedicated dressing rooms.

Your tutors will also support you in developing tools to aid your physical and emotional wellbeing. Core modules and activities focus on health for dancers and our close links with the Sport and Rehabilitation clinic will provide you with direct access to physical injury prevention, treatment and rehabilitation. Our Personal Tutor scheme will also offer you a defined point of pastoral care and academic support.

  • What to expect

Our approach to teaching and learning for 2021-2022 has been designed in response to student feedback. You will be on campus and able to access our specialist facilities for face-face teaching in dance technique, performance, fitness and creative and collaborative projects. Some contextual and theoretical learning will be delivered online, meaning you will have the flexibility to engage with some academic content from your home space and revisit recorded lectures in the lead up to submission points.

Innovative teaching that's enhanced by technology

Despite the challenges this year, lots of exciting innovation has emerged!

The creative industries created online activities during the pandemic, that provided access to world class performances and live online streaming. Our WATCH Parties created a virtual space that introduced our students to the latest dance creations in the industry. This supported learning, brought our community together, and made for rich group discussions both online and in person.

Technology has also assisted our students in looking after themselves. Our new online fitness programme ‘return to dance’ has been created specifically in response to the pandemic and the need for a guided, gradual return to physical activity. The online programme is FREE and accessible for all MDX Dance students and offer holders in preparation for study in September 2021.

Extensive support and mentoring in the development of technological skills and the introduction of a weekly wellbeing newsletter have also been put in place to support online learning.

A highlight this year has been the streaming of our live performance events such as our final year graduate showcase New Horizons: A Dancing Festival
