Studying with us during coronavirus in 2021

Studying Illustration

What to look forward to

At Middlesex, our teaching is personalised to ensure that you get a tailored experience to help you develop your creative identity. Unlike other institutions, our class sizes are kept small so that you get the maximum contact time with our expert tutors and facilities.

You will spend the majority of your time in the studio alongside a close-knit community of students, emulating the studio working environment in the creative industries.

  • Reach your full creative potential

You’ll have our state-of-the-art facilities at your fingertips to help develop your own identity and produce your best possible work, from photography to laser cutting.

We have several partners who come in and run external events such as Adobe and every year we take part in the Creative Jam (usually taking place at the BBC).

We also have an extensive alumni network, many of whom come in as guest speakers.

  • We're back on campus for teaching

Your timetable will be built around teaching time using our facilities on campus with online sessions for some activities where being virtual adds value. That means it’s not going to be like 2020 over again. We've combined the best of our pre-pandemic teaching with what's worked best for students while they've been learning at home.

We will be resuming life drawing classes in our studios; a fantastic opportunity for you to work with live models in person and express your ideas using our state-of-the art facilities.

You will also have open access to the illustration studio on specified days of the week so you can experience what it’s like to be in a vibrant creative community and to get a feel for a creative industry working environment.

Innovative teaching that's enhanced by technology

Our teaching and learning approach is evidence based and designed using feedback from students and staff during the pandemic and in previous years. For example, our students particularly liked having the more contextual classes online and recorded, meaning the material was available on demand whenever they needed it.

We were also able to host a diverse set of Zoom guest lectures from designers globally as a result of the flexibility of being online. We are excited to take these learning practices forward into our future teaching so you have the best possible learning experience.

This teaching year, we have also successfully converted practical projects into online events. Our annual end of year physical degree show was transformed into a fully online showcase, MDX Creative Graduates. Not only was this a fantastic way of exhibiting the amazing work by our creative students, but being online also meant our students’ work could reach industry professionals all over the world! Due to its success, we’re going to be carrying this forward in future years to run alongside a physical event.

We use technology to enhance your learning and put you in control. We will continue to use online platforms such as Zoom and Discord and guest lectures and most digital workshops will be recorded and uploaded to Mylearning on UniHub. All reading materials and podcasts will also be uploaded and available to access on demand.

Support for your successful career in illustration

  • In your second and third year, you'll be entered into several international creative competitions, such as: the Macmillan's Children's Book Prize, the Cape Observer Graphic Novel Prize and the Carmelite Prize

  • Visiting illustrators, agents, publishers and designers will come to our campus to show their work and discuss your portfolios

  • Professional practice is embedded in all years and there is a specific module dedicated to professional practice and preparation for employment within the creative industry in your third year

  • If government guidance allows, we will be continuing to display our best third year work at the D&AD New Blood Festival and at the Poetry Café in Covent Garden.

The team is looking forward to welcoming you to Middlesex! With our placement programme, state-of-the art facilities and dedicated team, we’re excited to see you develop into a professional, ready for a career in the creative industry.
