Studying with us during coronavirus in 2021

Studying Photography

What to look forward to

Throughout your learning, you’ll learn from and be supported by our committed staff, who have a broad range of professional expertise in photography in areas including digital imaging technology, editorial portraiture and reportage, and fashion.

Our staff are specialist practitioners, including renowned photography artist and film director Professor Richard Billingham and highly regarded portrait photographer and artist Eva Vermandel.

Reach your full creative potential

Join our award-winning programme and benefit from some of the best photographic facilities in the UK, such as our digital media facilities, studios, camera and lighting equipment, darkrooms and an extensive library.

You will be given free access to industry-standard software including the Adobe Creative Suite.

We're back on campus for teaching

Your timetable will be built around teaching time using our facilities on campus with online sessions for some activities where being virtual adds value. That means it’s not going to be like 2020 over again. We've combined the best of our pre-pandemic teaching with what's worked best for students while they've been learning at home.

We’ve planned your learning so it has most benefit for you.

  • Technical workshops and any practical hands on skills development will take place on campus in our studios
  • You will collaborate with your classmates in person during group work in progress tutorials, giving you the opportunity to learn from one another and experience what it’s like being part of a creative community
  • We’re also excited to bring back field trips, gallery visits and events orientated weeks on campus.

Innovative teaching that's enhanced by technology

Our approach to teaching and learning is evidence based and designed using feedback from students and staff during the pandemic and in previous years.

For example, our students particularly liked having a closer integration with our Student Learning Assistants who play an important role for both learning and teaching as well as the social aspects of the course.

The more contextual and theoretical parts of the course, such as the Visual Cultures modules will continue to be taught online, meaning you can re-watch lectures when you need to (and save on travel costs too!).

Tech also allows us to add innovative new ways of teaching into the mix like using Miro as an online shared workplace and a tool for crits and tutorials; an innovation from last teaching year which we will carry on using.

Our annual end of year physical degree show was transformed into a fully online showcase, MDX Creative Graduates.

Not only was this a fantastic way of exhibiting the amazing work by our creative students, but being online also meant that our students’ work could reach industry professionals all over the world!

Due to its success, we’re going to be carrying this forward in future years to run alongside a physical event.

Similarly, students and staff have curated their unique online exhibition: ‘Lucid’, showcasing the amazing work in a virtual gallery, as well as bringing in alumni to host career talks, and interactive workshops.

Support for your successful career in photography

At the end of your degree, you will exhibit your work at our Degree Show, a fantastic opportunity to showcase your talents to the creative industry

professional practice module & work placement in year 3 as well as industry portfolio reviews to help prepare you for life after graduation

We’ll also support your award entries into national industry competitions, which look great on your CV. Many prizes and awards have been achieved by students on the programme, including Free Range: Best Individual Student Exhibition Award (2016 / 2018 / 2019).

We are looking forward to welcoming you to Middlesex! With our placement programme, state-of-the art facilities and dedicated team, we’re excited to see you develop into a professional.

We know that studying photography at Middlesex will prepare you for a successful career and we are here to help you along your journey and to reach your goals.
