Studying Teacher Training

What to look forward to

Learn through a mix of theory and practice from one of the top 251-300 Education courses in the world (Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2021).

You’ll partake in school-based work experience in each year of your degree and apply your learnings to both theory and skills-based course work.

Get equipped with the right skills and experience

Our BA Primary with QTS course is focused on preparing you for practice through building both your hard skills and experience.

We do this through a combination of both theory-based modules, and practical assignments and workshops. Throughout your degree, we will prepare you to teach all the subjects of the National Curriculum for children from 5 to 11 years.

We focus heavily on bringing you first-hand experience through showcasing the variety of working and studying in London by taking you on field trips to museums, art galleries, places of worship, and even the River Thames.

You’ll also participate in group projects and seminar discussions to apply your theory to real-life concepts.

  • We're back on campus for teaching

Your timetable will be built around teaching time using our facilities on campus with online sessions for some activities where being virtual adds value. That means it’s not going to be like 2020 over again. We've combined the best of our pre-pandemic teaching with what's worked best for students while they've been learning at home.

We’ve planned your learning so it has most benefit for you:

    • You’ll be on campus for seminar group work and skills training in small groups which will provide a safe space for you to work with fellow students and tutors

    • You’ll be taught online through both live lectures where you can ask questions of tutors and lecturers or through pre-recorded lectures that you can watch at your own time.
  • Innovative teaching that's enhanced by technology

Our teaching and learning approach is evidence-based and designed using feedback from students and staff during the pandemic and in previous years.

For example, our students particularly liked that they had access to regular meetings with their tutors via Zoom, even during their placements.

We also use technology to enhance your learning and put you in control, like polls, virtual whiteboards, and quizzes during lectures so you can interact live.

Build experience through yearly placements

You’ll get to put the theory you learn in class to the test in your yearly school-based professional development module.

We’ll support you through individualised tutoring sessions to explore the right placement for you, as well as helping you to reflect on your experience and once you’re back in the classroom.

In your second year, we also offer you the option to take on a placement in a school for children with special educational needs and disabilities.

Paired with our modules on well-being and inclusive practices, you’ll be prepared for a variety of teaching settings.

Learn from highly experienced tutors

Our academic staff are a mix of highly respected researches, experienced teachers and industry professionals.

Whatever career path you choose to take, you’ll learn from the absolute best in the area who continue to bring their unique expertise to the classroom. You’ll see this expertise come to life in modules throughout your three years.

Whether that’s analysing the benefits or arguments against cross-curricular teaching or building knowledge on teaching in relation to Special Needs and Disabilities (SEND), you’ll come out of your degree with the specialist knowledge you need.

From our mixed teaching methods and our robust placement programme to our respected academic staff, we know that studying teacher training at Middlesex University will prepare you for a successful career. No matter your specialism of interest or career goals, we are here to help you along your journey and ensure you are equipped to practice in an ever-changing world.
